Summer Reading Adventure Everett Public Schools Two Cities, One School District

Read to Cure the “Summer Slide” Studies show that the effect of reading four to five books over the summer is enough to stop a decline in reading achievement from spring to fall. In a nutshell, if you don’t use it, you lose it. When school starts in the fall, students who don’t read over the summer “slide” backwards.

What should you do to be a part of the program? Read two books from your grade level list and complete an activity for each. Three Quotes that represent the main character and explain… Draw an object that symbolizes the theme and explain… Write a poem that represents a major conflict… Create a comic strip that summarizes your book… Explain how the novel is a product of the author’s experiences…

Can I Read Other Books? Of course! After you finish the required books, read as many books as you can, and read any book that interests you. You can complete other activities to earn other incentives. Or just read for fun!

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (1861)  In this unflaggingly suspenseful story of aspirations and moral redemption, humble, orphaned Pip, a ward of his short-tempered older sister and her husband, Joe, is apprenticed to the dirty work of the forge but dares to dream of becoming a gentleman. And, indeed, it seems as though that dream is destined to come to pass — because one day, under sudden and enigmatic circumstances, he finds himself in possession of "great expectations.“  808/ Clip from a movie version 808/

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (2011)  In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.  fXryyx4erU fXryyx4erU
