Thursday, September 4, 2014 Day 1 Science Starters Sheet 1. Please have these Items on your desk. Agenda Speed H.W. Science Starter: 2 Vocabulary words Acceleration- The rate at which velocity changes. Net Force- The overall force on an object when all the individual forces acting on it are added together.

Today’s to do list..... Correct last nights homework. Problems 1-5. Lab activity: Speed problems

Station 1 How far does a bicycle travel at a speed of 15 m/s for 15 seconds? A swimmer swims 20 m in 40 s. What is the swimmer’s average speed?

Station 2 What is the average speed (mph) for a car journey of 120 miles that began at and finished at noon? Calculate the speed for a car that went a distance of 125 miles in 2 hours time?

Station 3 A baseball is thrown a distance of 60 feet. What is its speed if it takes 0.5 seconds to cover the distance? How much time does it take for a bird flying at a speed of 45 miles per hour to travel a distance of 1,800 miles?

Station 4 A comet is cruising through the solar system at a speed of 50,000 kilometers per hour for 4 hours time. What is the total distance traveled by the comet during this time? If it takes Albert Pouhols 3 seconds to run from the batters box to first base at an average speed (velocity) of 6.5 meters per second, what is the distance he covers in that time?

Station 5 If Tom Brady throws the football 50 meters in 3 seconds, what is the average speed (velocity) of the football? If Justin races his Chevy S-10 down Highway 37 for 2560 meters in 60 seconds, what is his average speed (velocity)?

Station 6 Mike rides his motorcycle at an average speed (velocity) of 20 meters/second for 500 seconds, how far did he ride? Sarah backstrokes at an average speed of 8 meters per second, how long will it take her to complete the race of 200 meters length?

Station 7 Lauren’s SUV was detected exceeding the posted speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, how many kilometers per hour would she have been traveling over the limit if she had covered the a distance of 10 kilometers in 5 minutes? Tina’s calculations of the tarantula found that the spider was able to cover 20 centimeters in 5 seconds, what was the average speed of the spider?

Station 8 If you drive at 100 km/hr for 6 hours, how far will you go? A football field is about 100 m long. If it takes a person 20 seconds to run its length, how fast (what speed) were they running?
