The First Step in and Emergency Situation: AWARENESS Some General Facts about CPR: Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in adults. CPR doubles the chance of a person’s survival from sudden cardiac arrest. Recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiac events/sudden death emergencies (i.e. – heart attack, drowning, electrocution, and asphyxiation). 4

The Second Step in and Emergency Situation: 911 Secure the scene. Locate nearest phone. Provide EMS with current address. Provide phone number for EMS to contact. 5

The Third Step in and Emergency Situation: COMPRESSIONS Look, listen, and feel for any signs of breathing. Position victim for compressions. Ensure that compressions are performed at a depth of two inches and at a rate of 100 per minute. Continue compressions until the victim begins breathing again or emergency personnel arrives. 6
