About Healthy People Provides science-based, 10 year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans Serves as the foundation for prevention efforts across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Supports HHS efforts to create a healthier Nation

Mission of Healthy People 2020 Identify nationwide health improvement priorities. Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability. Provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at the national, State, and local levels. Engage multiple sectors to take actions to strengthen policies and improve practices. Identify critical research, evaluation, and data collection needs.

Healthy People 2020 Contains 42 topic areas 600 objectives which encompass 1,200 measures A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators, has been selected to communicate high- priority health issues The process of selecting the Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) was completed by approximately 50 members across the HHS and other Federal departments

What do you think are the 12 Leading Health Indicator Topics?

Healthy People 2020 Leading Health indicators: Access to health services Clinical preventive services (includes immunizations and infectious diseases) Environmental health Injury and violence Maternal, infant, and child health Mental health Nutrition, physical activity, and obesity Oral health Reproductive and sexual health (includes STDS) Social determinants Substance abuse Tobacco

Health Disparities Health disparities refer to differences between groups of people. These differences can affect how frequently a disease affects a group, how many people get sick, or how often the disease causes death. Many different populations are affected by disparities. These include: Racial and ethnic minorities Residents of rural areas Women, children, the elderly Persons with disabilities

HP 2020 Project Secretary Burwell has hired you to help promote HP2020. You are now a public health educator: Choose one of the 42 topic areas (see handout) Decide why this topic is a serious public health issue to you and our nation Choose one of the specific objectives under the topic to focus on Choose your target audience Establish a campaign (PSA) around this objective that can hopefully change the US life expectancy number in 2020

Campaign (PSA) Ideas Rap song / Rock song lyrics Video (commercial, PSA, role playing, etc.) Cartoon strip Poster, bulletin board, billboard, etc. Pamphlet/Flyer/Brochure

HP 2020 PSA You will have two health classes in the IMC to work on your project Projects may be completed in small groups (2 or 3 students) If your partner is absent BOTH days in the IMC – the partner will now work by themselves… You do not have to be artistic – just CREATIVE! You do NOT have to present the completed project in front of the class; but your project will be on display in room J006
