A noun is the part of speech used to describe a person, place, thing, quality, or action. The types of nouns we are going to look at are: common vs. proper and concrete vs. abstract
Common vs. Proper Nouns Common Nouns coffee shop jeans country teacher school Proper Nouns Starbucks Levi’s America Mrs. Johnson E.T. Booth Middle School Common noun = names a general item; does not require capitalization Proper noun = names specific item; requires capitalization *Exception* = remember common nouns can be capitalized at the beginning of a sentence!
Examples: 1. I have a friendly dog named Jake. Common noun = dog Proper noun = Jake Proper noun = Jake 2. We visited the country of Italy. Common noun = country Proper noun = Italy Proper noun = Italy * Identify the ONE common noun that DESCRIBES the proper noun!!
Concrete or Abstract?? A concrete noun is a noun that describes a material or tangible object. This is something you can physically touch. An abstract noun is a noun that describes an intangible concept such as love or envy. These are nouns that you can not physically touch.
