Presentation transcript:

A table is an arrangement of data (words and numbers) in rows and columns. Tables range in complexity from those with only two columns and a title to those with several columns and special formatting features. Tables are used to organize and present information in a concise, logical way to make it easy for the reader to understand and analyze information.

The following features can be used to make your tables more attractive. Vertical placement: Center tables vertically. The top and bottom margins will be equal. Horizontal placement: Center tables horizontally. The left and margins will be equal. Column width and Row width: Adjust column width and row height to put more white space around data in the rows and columns. Additional white space makes data easier to read.

Vertical alignment: Data may be aligned top, center, and bottom. Title rows are often center aligned. Data rows are usually center or bottom aligned. Horizontal alignment: Words may be left aligned or centered. Whole numbers are right aligned. Decimal numbers are decimal aligned. Figures may be centered.

Delete empty rows and columns in a table. Insert rows as needed above or below an existing row. Insert a column to the left or right of an existing column as needed.

To make a table attractive and easy to ready, join two or more cells into one cell for the main title, source notes, and other data, as needed. Any existing cell can be split (divided) into two or more smaller cells if necessary.

Shading: Use shading to enhance table appearance and to highlight selected columns, rows, or individual cells. Borders: Borders may be applied around an entire table or around cells, rows, or columns within a table. Borders improve appearance as well as highlight the data within the borders.

Text can be sorted alphabetically in ascending order (A to Z) or descending order (Z to A). Numbers and dates can be sorted numerically in either ascending (1 to 10) or descending (10 to 1) order.
