Autism Spectrum Disorder

Causes and How It Is Transmitted Scientists have identified a number of rare gene changes, or mutations, associated with autism Most autism cases appear to be caused by a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development.

Target Population Autism usually starts in early brain development, which would be while the baby is still in the womb. Babies are the ones affected by it and have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

Where and How Autism Affects the CNS/PNS Research has shown that cerebellum in autistic kids is severely underdeveloped than a kid's cerebellum who isn't diagnosed with Autism. The Amygdala also appears to be damaged in autistic children.

Symptoms Noticeable in babies at about 18 months Has problems socializing, communicating, playing, and with their behavior The symptoms may vary from moderate to severe. Symptoms may also decrease with age and proper medication.

Prognosis The prognosis for a child diagnosed with Autism is better than it has ever been. Even though every case of Autism is different, the prognosis has been improved through the years with early diagnosis and early intervention.

Cure/Treatment There is no actual cure for Autism It can be treated if diagnosed at an early age and treatment begins immediately. The most common treatment is therapy to help with speaking skills, social skills, and behavior. Medication can be prescribed to help with things like anxiety and depression.

Celebrities with Autism Daryl Hannah, best known for her role in movies like "Splash" and "Kill Bill," was reportedly diagnosed with a form of autism when she was a child Sylvester Stallone's son, Seargeoh, was diagnosed with autism in the early 1980s Jenny McCarthy, has a son named Evan who suffers from the disorder

Organizations and Medical Facilities Autism Treatment Center of America- has training programs for parents and professionals caring for children challenged by Autism. Autism Society of America- Provides information, education, supporting research, programs, and services for the Autism community. Autism Speaks- provides information and awareness of Autism.
