Matthew: Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7)(cont) I.Discretion in Giving (Matt. 6:1-4)--sound no trumpet! (v.2). II. The Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:5-15) A. No "grandstanding" but discretion (v.5-6) B. Prohibition against vain repetitions and empty phrases (v.7-8) Q: What are some "vain repetitions" or "empty phrases" you have heard in prayer?

C. Model for Prayer (v.9-13). 1. Acknowledge God 2. Pray for the dominion of his kingdom 3. Petition for daily physical needs 4. Petition for daily spiritual needs NOTE: There is a connection with your forgiveness from God and your forgiveness of others (v.14-15). Matthew: Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7)

III.Fasting (Matt. 6:16-18). Be discreet so that your praise will be from God and not men. IV. Laying Up of Treasures (Matt.6:19-24) A. Not on Earth because they are vulnerable (v.19) B. Lay up your treasures in Heaven; they will be secure (v.20). C. The location of your true treasure will reveal the focus of your heart. D. You can't worship God and money. V.True Judgment (Matt 7) A. Judgmental Spirit (Matt. 7:1-6). Jesus prohibited critical, nitpicking and fault- finding behavior; however, he his instruction did not prevent a person from making moral and spiritual judgments of others—especially of one who is a believer (see, Matt 23:1-36, Matthew: Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7)

B. God’s Judgment (Matt. 7:21-23). Jesus taught that we are to obey God in our actions. In the end, God will exercise divine judgment on those who willfully disobey Him. Matthew: Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7)
