Agenda – Week 4, Day 1 Debrief from Graphics/Photoshop Asgn Transition to Diagrams/Visio –Go over assignment –Software Tutorial Plans for Thursday

Debriefing from Photoshop In groups of 3 (not with teammates) –Publish your current portfolio (to share solutions) –Discuss your solutions 1 –Select a single solution to share with the class –Select someone in the group, other than the designer, will share the solution with the class 1 Potential reasons: a) See other solutions, b) Learn technology tricks, c) Hear about design strategies, d) Gain feedback from peers, e) Identify features of quality solutions, f) Get to know your colleagues

Transition – Assignment 4 Basic Description: –Use Visio to create diagrams showing results of an evaluation of your organization’s website. Team coordination – Conduct Evaluation –Evaluate the site using a set of published website design heuristics –URLs for papers with heuristics are available on the assignment –Identify 5 strengths & 5 areas for improvement (minimum). –Class time will be available on Thursday to complete the evaluation. Individual Effort – Create Diagrams –All diagrams work from same basic content –Diagrams have varied “goals”: one formal, one artistic, one whimsical

Diagrams - Warm up questions What are drawing types that you know about? What tools would you currently use to draw diagrams? What are some challenges in creating diagrams? Challenges you personally have faced?

Exploring Visio “Solutions” Explore example Visio diagrams 1 : –General Diagrams –Network Diagrams –Charts –Maps –Project Management Identify Visio building blocks in examples: –Shapes (and Stencils) –Connector –Labels –Callouts –Backgrounds –Drawing Types 1 Examples available at help/contents/Visio_Solutions

Exploring Visio - Demo Steps –New drawing type –Opening additional stencils –Adding shapes to diagrams – Drag/drop, Stamp –Adding connectors – Using tool bar, From stencil, Connecting to shapes, Redrawing, Line properties (formatting) –Adding labels – As part of a shape, Independent –Adding backgrounds

A Quick Test… What types of shapes are available in the stencils that come with the calendar drawing type? What types of network drawings are available? Where would you find the command to –Insert a graphic? –Zoom in? –Turn the grid off? –Move [an object] to front?

Practice with Visio Work with the tutorial handout…

Breadth -- Anticipating Use Scenario 1: How could you use Visio to support project planning? What diagrams for what purposes? Scenario 2: How could you use Visio to support the presentation of 2000 census results? What diagrams for what purposes? Scenario 3: How could you use Visio to support the design and implementation of a new computer network? What diagrams for what purposes?
