Essential Questions 1. Why was Darius the Great the greatest of all Persian kings? 2. Who was the first Persian ruler of Egypt’s 27 th Persian Dynasty?

Cyrus the Great  Cyrus the Great was the one who found the Persian Empire.  He united both Iranian tribes, they were called the Medes and the Persians.  The Jews considered Cyrus one of God’s anointed ones.  He welcomed them into the empire when they were kicked out of their original homes.

 Cyrus the Great was very caring and generous, he believed in honoring customs and religions.  Unlike other conquers, he didn’t destroy the temples instead he kneeled there to pray.  Cyrus the Great ruled the Persian Empire for only 8 years then came in his son CambysesII to rule the Empire.

In Asia

Cambyses II C ambyses, the son of Cyrus the Great, ruled thePersian Empire after his father’s death. He expanded the empire by conquering Egypt. He was the first ruler of Egypt’s 27 th Persian Dynasty. Cambyses didn’t follow his father’s wise example. He scorned the Egyptian religion, he ordered to burn the images of their gods. He overthrew the Egyptian Pharaoh, Psamtek III, last ruler of the 26 th Dynasty to become the first ruler of Egypt’s 27 th Persian Dynasty. After he captured Egypt, Cambyses took the name Mesutire which means “Offspring of Re.” Cambyses’ victory of ruling Egypt came to an end and the Egyptians ruled their own country in the mid 20 th Century.

Darius the Great DDarius was the greatest ruler of all the Persian kings. He ruled the Persian Empire after the death of Cambyses II. Darius extended the empire into Europe and India, but his only failure was his inability to conquer Greece. Darius did conquer northern Greece, Thrace- Macedonia, but he failed to conquer all of Greece. He fought 2 wars with the Greeks which was a disaster. He also established a government system. Darius divided the empire into districts known as Satrapies. He made the official language for the empire called Aramaic. After Darius the Great’s death, the Persian Empire was succeeded by his son, Xerxes.
