First… we’ll define each CertificateDiplomaApplied DegreeDegree Provides students with documentation for specific occupations Signifies students are prepared to work in a certain area Is a combination of theoretical learning and practical learning. Enables students to apply for positions above entry- level in certain industry Designed to provide a more in depth theory based and academic method to learning

What are the requirements? Certificate You must have some high school courses and may be required to have attained a specific grade in certain subject areas. *certain Universities offer certificate programs. Here you may be required to have graduated high school.

What are the requirements? Diploma Must have High School Diploma May require completion of certain courses and minimum grade requirements in each

What are the requirements? Applied Degree Admission is similar to the requirements for Diploma programs Completing a Diploma program may be necessary for entry into a 3 rd year Applied Degree program

What are the requirements? Degree Must have high school diploma A minimum grade has to have been met in specific subject areas for admission

What is the Time Commitment for each? Certificate: 1 year or less full time study Diploma: 2 years of full time study Applied Degree: 4 year program (6 semesters academic,2 industry) Degree: 4 – 9 years of full time study (depending on level of degree earned)

Degree Options University Transfer Programs o First 2 years of degree-level program can be earned at many different colleges up to 60 credits o Must transfer to accredited university/college for last two years o Pros: smaller classes, lower tuition fees, lower entry GPA Bachelor Degree Programs o Provide direct access to graduate students o Found at universities, specific colleges, private university colleges with approved degree programs o Commitment of 3-4 years of fulltime study

Degree Options Master’s Degree programs o Must have a completed Bachelor’s degree for admission o Commitment of 2 years with full time study o Complete either thesis or coursework Doctoral Degree Programs o 2-3 years of full time university and research are required o Intent of discovering knowledge that will enhance student’s knowledge in their major field of study o Requires preparation and defense of dissertation on an approved topic

Private vs. Public Colleges Private Colleges Grant degrees approved by the Minister of Advanced Education and Technology Alberta has 7 private colleges Public Colleges May offer academic upgrading, job readiness, apprenticeship, certificate, diploma university transfer, baccalaureate and applied degree programs. Alberta has 14 public colleges

Colleges Alberta offers a variety of colleges which aim at different types of careers An example would be Grant MacEwan Center For the Arts.

Colleges Professors are able to give more one on one instruction to students because of smaller class sizes. Colleges can offer students a smaller, more close-knit community.

Transfer Credit Consortium Programs eCampus

Transfer Credit Allows one to do a number of credits at an institution outside of the desired school of completion. Transfer agreement is an agreement between two institutions, a sender and receiver, indicating how the sending institution’s course or program will be accepted for credit at the receiving institution (p ).

Provincial Certificate Programs The first step to becoming an apprentice is finding a job. This is like any other job search, except you are looking for an employer who is willing to hire you as an apprentice in a trade. Apprenticeship usually begins with a period of work followed by an in-school technical training session. This routine is generally followed in each period of the trade's apprenticeship program (programs range from 3 to 5 periods, depending on the trade).
