Essential Question Think about it now, maybe jot some stuff down You will have a chance to see it at the end again Describe how all the body systems work together

Skeletal System Holds the body together, framework of horse Constructed of bone and cartilage Has blood veins and blood marrow in them. Axial- skull, spine, ribs, breastbone, pelvis, tail Appendicular- forelegs, hind legs Articulations- union of two or more bones

Skeleton of Horse

Muscular System Provides movement internally and externally It is made up of 3 types of muscle Smooth muscle- Found in digestive system mainly Cardiac muscle- Only found in the heart Skeletal muscle- Attached to the bone and moves the body

Muscle diagram

Digestive System Processes food into a form useable form The whole digestive system is almost 100ft long!! Horses process their food rather quickly Includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines

Digestive system

Urinary System Processes and produce waste products Contains kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra. The kidney filters approximately 200 gallons a day!

Urinary system

Respiratory System lets the horse breathe Consists of the nasal passage, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea, heart, bronchi, lungs and the diaphragm

Respiratory system

Circulatory System Distributes blood throughout the body Consists of the heart, veins, and arteries Heart of a horse can weigh up to 8lbs and has 4 chambers

Circulatory System

Reproductive System System that handles reproduction of young Male is a stallion, female is a mare Smooth muscle is in uterus of mare

Nervous System Supplies the body with info about it’s internal and external environment Consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerve fibers, and sensory receptors Center of control over other systems

Nervous System

Endocrine System Releases hormones to the body Main purpose of this system is to maintain homeostasis in the body

Endocrine System

Activity Using key words from the powerpoint Tape onto your back Have someone match it up with you Listen for further directions

Essential Question Describe how the body systems work together. Write a short summary using at least 5 of the words from the activity
