GRAVITY EQ: What is the relationship among the mass of objects, the distance between the objects, and the amount of gravitational attraction? SPI 0807.12.5
What is GRAVITY? Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward each other.
All objects with mass have gravitational force! Even you attract other objects around you because of gravity, but you have too little mass for the force to be very strong.
Why is it that gravity pulls us towards the center of earth?
The answer is in Earth’s layers…
As the earth formed, rocks melted, and denser materials (like nickel and iron) sank to the center of the earth and formed the core. Less dense materials floated to the surface and became the crust.
Your Task: Color the layers (use any color you want!) Label the layers Label the densest layer of earth Answer both questions using complete sentences!
A little more about gravity… 1. The greater the mass, the greater the gravitational force.
The MORE mass an object has, the MORE gravitational force it will have.
If the sun is so big and has so much mass, then why are we not sucked in by its gravitational pull?
2. The closer the objects are together, the greater the gravitational force. The Earth and the moon have a stronger pull on each other than the Earth and any other planet because the Earth and moon are closer to one another.

What is gravitational force? The force that keeps people from moving The force of attraction between any two objects The force that makes stopped objects start moving The only force that changes an object’s speed
Gravity and the Solar System EQ: How does gravity affect the solar system? SPI 0807.12.6
How does the solar system stay “together”?
The sun contains more than 99. 8% of all the mass in the solar system The sun contains more than 99.8% of all the mass in the solar system. Its size gives it the gravity it needs to hold the solar system together. The sun’s gravity pulls the objects toward it while they keep trying to move away. It’s a never-ending tug-of-war that keeps the planets in their orbits instead of flying off into space.
The mass of the Sun is 333,000 times greater than the Earth. As a result, a falling object near the surface of the Sun would be pulled downward 28 times faster than on our planet.

The Sun has layers just like Earth does…
Gravity Review
Pretend the Earth’s gravitational pull just got 3 times stronger. What would happen to your weight?
How does the sun’s gravity compare to earth’s gravity? The sun’s gravity is stronger The earth’s gravity is stronger The gravitational pull is the same Scientists aren’t able to measure the sun’s gravitational pull
The amount of gravity depends on the _______ of the objects Shape Masses Weight Smell
In addition to distance, what factor determines the force of gravity between two objects? The volume of each The mass if each The diameter of each The chemical formula of each
What is the BEST explanation for why the moon orbits Earth rather than Earth orbiting the moon? Earth has less mass then the moon. Earth rotates faster than the moon rotates. The moon has no gravitational pull on anything. Earth has more mass than the moon.
What effect does the moon’s gravity have on earth? It keeps the earth in orbit around the sun It causes tides It creates light for earth It has no effect for earth
If you took two objects to the moon and dropped them, what would happen? Would they fall at the same rate they did here in TN?
Is the gravitational force the same everywhere on earth (at the bottom of the ocean, at sea level, at the top of the tallest mountain, etc.)?
If you took two objects to the moon and dropped them, what would happen? Would they fall at the same rate they did here in TN?
