Presentation transcript:

 1) How far away is the center of the Earth?  2) What did the continents used to look like?  3) Why does land move?  4) How much did you study for our test yesterday? And how did you study?

 Take a guess at how many miles it is to the center of the Earth.  20,856,000 feet (5,280 feet per mile)  (3,950 miles)

 SWBAT explain the layers of the Earth  SWBAT explain convection currents & how they cause plate movement

 Warm-Up  TET  Objective  Guided Notes – Earth layers  Convection Currents  Earth Layer Foldable  Exit Ticket

All you need to know

 The earth is made up of three different layers: ◦ Crust  Oceanic  Continental ◦ Mantle  Upper Mantle  Middle Mantle  Lower Mantle ◦ Core  Inner core  Outer core

 Lithosphere - rigid outer layer ◦ Crust and upper mantle (rigid part)

 Outer layer, the layer we live on.  A solid layer made of rock  The thinnest layer of the earth ◦ 30 kilometres thick The crust

◦ Oceanic: very dense, made of basalt, thin ◦ Continental: less dense, made of granite, thicker

 The Mantle is the second layer  The thickest layer – 3000 km thick  A really thick liquid layer made of molten Rock - magma. Is sometimes called plastic  The heat from the outer core makes the part of the mantle closest to the outer core be hotter than the rest The crust The Mantle

Asthenosphere - solid rock that flows slowly (like hot asphalt) ◦ Plastic-like part of the mantle ◦ The convection part

 Mesosphere - middle layer (solid)

 The Outer core is the third most outer layer of the earth  The Outer core is a liquid/molten layer made of Molten Iron and Nickel  The Outer core is 2,266 km thick The crust The Mantle The Outer Core

 Center layer of the earth ◦ km thick  Hottest layer,  Made of solid nickel & iron  Stays solid because there is so much weight on top of it that no parts can move The crust The Mantle The Outer Core The Inner Core

How do particles change when they are cold and hot? Hotter objects are _____LESS______ dense and colder objects are _____MORE_______ dense.

Take notes on these clips while you watch! Write down what you see uvA (two colors) uvA 2. Zf4&NR=1 (fish tank with floating plate) Zf4&NR=1

 The transfer of heat due to unequal heat from the core as magma heats and rises up, then cools and sinks down  Responsible for the movement of the tectonic plates

 The part of the mantle that is hotter is lighter, so it floats to the top and cools.  After it has cooled it sinks again because it is heavier.  This makes currents in the mantle that move the crust above around. The crust The Mantle

23

 1) Name the layers of the Earth in the correct order from outer to inner  2) What are convection currents? Why do they occur?  3) How do convection affect the Earth?
