Medical Bill The new Medical Bill sets the legal framework for the following:- ● Registration and Licencing of Physicians ● The Standards of Professional Conduct ● The Standards of the Practice of Medicine ● Mechanisms for the Administration of the aforementioned

Medical Bill Qualifications and Procedures for Registration ● Must have a Medical Degree from an institution of learning recognized by the Council as a body for such ● Must have completed an internship in a satisfactory manner ● Must have completed a minimum of two (2) years of supervised rotational medical practice post internship ● Can read, write, speak and understand the English Language ● Is a fit and proper person to practice medicine in the Bahamas

Medical Bill Types of Registration ● Provisional ● Temporary ● Specially Registered ● Special Purpose ● Medical Practitioner ● Medical Specialist

Medical Bill Licence ● Licenced under the category of their registration with or without restrictions or conditions as the Council may determine. ● All licences shall take effect on the date specified in the licence and shall be valid for the year in which it is issued and shall expire on the 31 st day of December of that year unless the licence has been cancelled.

Medical Bill 2014 Licence cont’d ● Licences will not be issued to any person who is not a public officer, a citizen of The Bahamas, a permanent resident with the rights to work, without the concurrence of the Minister responsible for Immigration. ● The Council shall cause to be published annually in the gazette after the 31 st day of January, a list of all Medical Practitioners licenced under this Act.

Medical Bill Standard of Professional Conduct The Code of Conduct/Principles In general, a doctor is expected to: 1. Be dedicated to providing competent, compassionate and appropriate medical ace to patients. 2. Be and advocate for patients’ care and well being and endeavor to ensure that patients suffers no harm.

Medical Bill 2014 Code of Conduct/Principles cont’d 3. Provide access to treat patients without prejudice of race, religion, creed, social standing, disability or financial status. A doctor shall also be prepared to treat patients on an emergency or humanitarian basis when circumstances prevail. 4. Abide by all laws and regulations governing medical practice and abide by the Code of Ethics of the profession. 5. Maintain the highest standards of moral integrity and intellectual honesty.

Maintain a professional relationship with patients and their relatives and not abuse this relationship through inappropriate personal relationship or for personal gain. 7. Keep confidential all medical information about patients. 8. Maintain professionalism in informing the public about his/her service ensuring that information projected is purely factual and devoid of any attempt at self aggrardisnent.

Participate in activities contributing to the good of the community including public health education. 11.
