Let’s review before finding the theme… Given the notes on theme, students will read “Catch the Moon” in the text book or interactive readers and identify the story’s theme by using the given guidelines with 100% accuracy. Let’s review before finding the theme… Why is Luis working for his father? Who are the Tiburones, and what does their name mean? What “treasure hunt” does Luis go on late one night? Find the passage that explains the story’s title.

What is Luis’ attitude at the beginning of the story toward his job and how does it change? Luis loves working at the junkyard at the beginning but hates it because he fights with his father all the time. Luis hates working for his father and makes fun of the business, but after his “treasure hunt,” he appreciates his father’s work more. Luis doesn’t like working at the junkyard but he starts to like it because he starts dating Naomi.

What role does Naomi play in the story? Luis acts out because he doesn’t know how to grieve the loss and this makes him fight with his father, who grieves by keeping this wife’s things. Luis acts like the adult of the family and has to take care of his father who is not taking the loss of his wife well. Luis believes that his mother sent Naomi to him to help him get over the loss and the father cannot get over his loss.
