THE HYPNOTISTS

CHARACTERS 1. JACKSON OPUS (THE MAIN CHARACTER) 2. TOMMY CICERELLI (JACKSON’S BEST FRIEND) 3. MR. AND MRS. OPUS (JACKSON’S PARENTS) 4. MR. MAKO (THE DIRECTOR OF SENTIA) 5. MRS. SAMUELS (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SENTIA) 6. KIRA KENDALL (A STUDENT AT SENTIA) 7. WILSON (THE BULLY AT SENTIA) 8. AXEL BRAINTREE (SANDMAN DIRECTOR)

CONFLICT & RESOLUTION THE CONFLICT, (OR THE PROBLEM), IN THE STORY IS THAT JACKSON DOESN’T KNOW IF HE’S USING HIS POWERS FOR GOOD OR EVIL. THE RESOLUTION IS THAT HE SEES WILSON (the school bully) & DERON SNEAK INTO THE CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT HEADQUATERS AND THEY STEAL THE FILES. JAX TELLS ON THEM, AND THEN HE FIGURES OUT THAT DR.MAKO SENT THEM TO STEAL THE FILES.

PLOT This book is about a 12 year-old boy named Jackson Opus, he goes by Jax. Jax is a Mind-bender!!! In other words, a hypnotist. Because he is a hypnotist, he gets accepted into a mind-bending academy, called Sentia. It is for mind-benders all over the world to practice their powers for good… Or at least that’s what Jax thinks. He doesn’t know if he is using his powers for , or for . You’ll have to read to find out. KEY: = good =bad

SETTING NEW YORK CITY SENTIA (MIND-BENDING ACADEMY) JACKSON’S SCHOOL THE SETTINGS IN THE STORY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: NEW YORK CITY SENTIA (MIND-BENDING ACADEMY) JACKSON’S SCHOOL JACKSON’S HOUSE E-Z wash coin-op laundry (sandman secret meeting place) TIME Modern-Day

RECOMMENDATION The difficult words that are in this book include: I think this reading recommendation should start at a 5th grade reading level. It has some very challenging words. I would encourage you to read this book, if you like action, mysteries, or adventure. It is a fast-paced book. The difficult words that are in this book include: Philosophically despairingly Rendezvous self-consciously Malevolence locomotive

THEME The theme, or, moral of the story is just because you get a big opportunity, doesn’t always mean that it’s the best decision to accept it. In this case, Jax gets an opportunity to go to Sentia. That’s a big deal! The teacher is practically a celebrity! But, he later learns the hard way that he didn’t make the best decision. You’ll have to read to find out.

FUN FACT! Hypnotism uses many different tools. Some hypnotists, like Jax, use their eyes to hypnotize. Other hypnotists that don’t use their eyes, use watches that they swing right to left, as they speak to the subject. This is the most common method to use. Other hypnotists use pendulums, clocks, or even kinetic balls, pictured below. Hypnotism is possible, but hard to master. Real hypnotists hypnotize people to jump up & down, run like a pack of wolves are chasing them, or even jump off of a bridge into water!

GENRE The genre of this book is an adventure! It is adventure because from the beginning, Jax tries to figure out his ability of mind-bending and who is trying to get him to use his powers for good or bad. Will he turn to the famous Dr. Mako, or turn to a sandman whom he met at a pizzeria, Axel Braintree? You’ll have to read the WHOLE book to find out.
