STANDARD GRADE PE Learning Skills
Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson you will; Be aware of the different ways to learn skills Understand the difference between gradual build up and whole part whole
Learning Skills There are two different ways in which we can learn skills: GRADUAL BUILD UP (Bit by Bit) WHOLE-PART-WHOLE METHOD
Gradual Build up Gradual build up is a way of learning skills- bit-by-bit. This way of learning a skill allows you to learn complex or dangerous skills in a safe environment while your confidence grows. Learnt in stages, with each stage more demanding and required to be mastered before moving onto the next Learner can therefore concentrate on one part of the skill at a time before moving on For example: the lay up in Basketball can be learned in this manner.
The lay-up using Gradual build-up This skill/technique is complex as it is made up of lots of small parts. Step 1: Stand at the basket and shoot for the corner of the small square on the back board. Step 2:Step onto your left foot and jump up to shoot towards the small square on the backboard.
The lay-up using Gradual build-up Step 3: Two step run up, right then left, jump up and shoot off the backboard. Step 4:Bounce the ball once, take a two step run up, right then left, jump and shoot off the backboard.
The lay-up using Gradual build-up Step 5: Practise the shot after a dribble (1-2-shoot) After you have done these steps and can do them confidently you can now do the whole skill and can now begin to practice it in more game like situations
WHOLE-PART-WHOLE Front Crawl Used by performers who already have experience of that activity/skill Perform skill, identify weakness, practice that weakness then perform whole skill again For example; Whole – swim front crawl, Part- arms not entering water straight, use float to isolate arms no legs, Whole- practice full stroke again
STAGES OF LEARNING There are 3 important stages in learning and developing skills; –Planning stage (Cognitive) –Practice stage –Automatic stage REMEMBER When DESCRIBING a skill we use PAR (preparation, action, recovery)
PLANNING STAGE Find out what the skill involves Establish all the parts of the skill First attempts at skill Many errors
PRACTICE STAGE Linking all the parts of the skill together Simple skills require less practice than complex skills Less errors during performance at this stage
AUTOMATIC STAGE No errors Key parts automatic therefore able to link various other skills together Basketball lay up requires speed, power to jump whilst dribbling, jumping, holding the ball and hitting a target.
