Nixon’s New Look at the World  Nixon didn’t see the world as us vs. communist.  He was pragmatic when it came to foreign policy  He saw that all communist countries weren’t always working together to destroy us.  He acted more to help America’s national interests not just fight communism.

Ping-pong Diplomacy  The National US Ping- pong team went to China for the 31 st World Table Tennis Championship.  They were the first Americans allowed in the country since the Communist took over in  They were warmly received and began to “open the door” to China

Opening China  They invited our ping pong team to play  Nixon started talking to China.  In 1972, Nixon visited China and brought the countries closer together

Détente with the Soviet Union  USSR war worried about us becoming friendlier to China so they wanted to talk.  This resulted in the SALT I treaty that slowed the nuclear arms race.
