th grade math Writing Expressions

Objective To translate word phrases into algebraic expressions. Why? To master another aspect of Algebra and Functions in 6 th grade math (and beyond). Being able to write expressions is a key component in Algebra and other higher math when solving any kind of word problem.

California State Standards AF 1.2: Evaluate an algebraic expression for a given situation, using up to three variables. AF 1.3: Apply algebraic order of operations and the commutative, associative, … properties to evaluate expressions… MR 3.0: Move beyond a particular problem by generalizing to other situations.

Vocabulary Chart of terms for the 4 operations. * Order matters in is VERY important! Remember about parentheses: 6 times the sum of y and 1 = 6 x (y + 1) or 6(y + 1) SumDifference*ProductQuotient* AddSubtractMultiplyDivide AndLess than In all Altogether

How to Write Expressions 1) Read the statement and understand what you are being asked to do. 2) Look for the key words to translate into operations (+, -, x, ÷). 3) Look for “is” to translate to =. 4) Parentheses are used to arrange in a certain order. 4) Write out your expression or equation and check your work. A)A sum of a number and 3. = x + 3 B) 37 increased by 5 = C) 10 times a number = 10 x n or 10n or 10 ‧n D) 2 less than a number = n – 2 E) A quantity more than 10 = 10 + x

Try It! Write each phrase as an expression 1)6 less than k 2) t divided by 8 3)m and 3 more 4) Alex raked 5 bags. Adam raked an x amount. How many bags were raked in all? 1)k – 6 2) t ÷ 8 3) m + 3 4) r + 5

Objective Review You can now translate word phrases into algebraic expressions. Why? You have now mastered another aspect of Algebra and Functions in 6 th grade math (and beyond). Being able to write expressions is a key component in Algebra and other higher math when solving any kind of word problem. You can translate word phrases into mathematical expressions using numbers, symbols, and letters.

Independent Practice Complete problems Copy original problem first. Show all work! If time, complete Mixed Review: If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
