What Is Facility Management? Primary purpose is to ensure a facility is run safely for all those who might be in and around the facility. FM entails a variety of skills such as planning, designing, leasing, project management, facility marketing, and construction management. What do you think is the most important skill, and why?

Facility Maintenance When surveyed, facility mangers have highlighted that maintenance absorbs the greatest amount of their time (17%) followed by space management (14%), interior design (11%), and budgeting and forecasting (9%).

Duties of a Facility Manager Long- and short-term planning Financial forecasting Property acquisition and disposal Specifying work responsibility and space use Architectural and engineering planning and management Managing all phases of construction and renovation work Managing maintenance systems and protocols Managing all operations from administrative functions to security protocols

The Facility Manager Facility managers are assigned a wide range of tasks in planning, designing, and managing facilities. They are responsible for coordinating the physical workplace with the people and work of an organization. (continued)

Planning Planning entails developing a mission statement, goals, objectives, and tactics: Mission statement: The New Haven Flounders are dedicated to providing wholesome family entertainment at a reasonable price. Strategic goals: The team will sell out at least 10 home games (this is measurable and concrete). (continued)

Planning (continued) Objectives: Develop 20 theme nights designed to attract key constituents to the games (it is hoped that 10 of these games will result in the sellouts being sought in the strategic goals). (Similar to goals, these objectives are concrete and measurable but also provide some flexibility so managers can be more creative.) (continued)

Planning (continued) Tactics: Contact local church groups, develop several ethnic nights (e.g., Hispanic day, kosher night), hire fireworks company, schedule giveaway nights, develop attractive ticket pricing packages for 5 of the 20 key games. Tactics are the simplest steps required in order to accomplish the objectives.
