Animal Adaptations

Learning Intentions I know the three main types of adaptation. By looking at an animal, I can identify structural adaptations. I can suggest reasons for the adaptation because of the animal’s environment and can say how this helps the animal to survive. Success Criteria I can offer ideas in a discussion. I can extract information from a video I can produce a tidy mind map of different animals and their structural adaptations.

Adaptations to an organism’s environment can usually be identified as -structural (physical - how an organism is built), -functional (physiological – how an organism works inside) -behavioural (what an organism does)

Looks cute but watch this

Which of the animals that you have just seen do you think is the most dangerous? The most dangerous animal is the MOSQUITO. Why do you think this is? What do mosquitos do?

What structural adaptations does an elephant have to help it survive?

In January 2013 poachers killed a family of 11 elephants. Which structural feature did the poachers kill for?

What are these dolphins doing?

Camouflage and Mimicry Some animals use camouflage to hide from predators and danger. Watch the following video to see some.

Which side of the classroom would you go?

Coral SnakeKing Snake

Spot the wolf

Almost like a leaf with legs!

Spot the animal!

Warning off Predators Some animals use other methods to warn off predators. Can you name any?

1.Warning Colours Some animals have distinct bright colourings. These are to warn off potential predators that a bright colour could lead to poisoning Poison Dart Frog Spiny Spider

2.Poisons Some animals produce poisons to warn off predators, The worlds most poisonous creature – the poison dart frog Jellyfish

3. Spikes Animals have developed deterrents to animals that try to eat them.
