DIVISION OF GERMANY & THE BERLIN AIRLIFT Presentation by: Tanner Lackey and Zaira Moises

Let Us Begin…..  On May 8 th 1945, Germany surrendered & the European war was over for the allies.  Each of the allies got a zone of Germany –U.S. –Great Britain –France –Soviet Union

The Potsdam Conference  The Potsdam Conference was held July 17 th 1945  “They” decided what would happen with the fate of Germany and Poland.  Joseph Stalin gained Poland, but only if he promised to allow free elections.

Consequences of the “split”  Due to the new boundaries, Germans moved westward to escape the communist threat.  During this move, ~ 2 million people died or disappeared and 12 million became homeless.

East and West Germany  With growing tensions between France, G.B. and the U.S towards Soviet Russia, Soviet Russia decided to seclude themselves from the world.  In 1947 France, G.B. and the U.S. decided to combine their territories and form West Germany.  Not too long after the Soviet Union formed East Germany.

Beginning of the Berlin Airlift  On April 9,1948, Stalin ordered all of American military personnel out of the eastern zone of Berlin.  On June 24, 1948, all of water and land access to west Berlin was cut of by the Soviet Union.

Berlin Airlift  By July 1 st, allied planes were starting to take over aid, goods, and medical supplies during all 24 hours of a day, Planes were landing in Berlin every 25 minutes.  The Berlin Airlift was the first time in history were people were kept alive by airplanes.  the US delivered 1,783,572.7 tons of goods, and the British delivered 541,936.9 tons of goods which in total was 2.3 Million tons from 277, 569 total flights to Berlin.  the German people called the planes that delivered aid “Rosinen-Bombers”

The Berlin Wall  Just past midnight on August th Soviet soldiers drove through East Germany and built a massive wall across Berlin to stop East Germans from crossing to the West.
