Green Star Program Rose Valley Elementary

Background Energy Information  As of today, SD23 is meeting the Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement requirements  We more than achieved 5% reduction of energy by 2011

Change is Needed  Upgrading schools to be more energy efficient only goes so far.  Capital spending cannot reasonably attain the reductions needed.

Maintain Status Quo Through 2016  SD23 Fails to meet BC Government PSECA requirements to reduce energy use by 14% by 2016  Only hits 11%

Challenges  Increases in BC Hydro rates will require an additional $420,000 to be redirected from education services. (Potentially this will continue to climb)  As a centralized budget, there is currently no direct incentive for schools to save energy.

Opportunities  With little effort, we can save 10% of energy usage;  With more effort, we can save 20% or more.  What’s in it for us?

Good Feelings  Conserving our natural resources  Using less fossil fuels  Creating less pollution  Protecting our environment  AND…

Hard, Cold, CASH!!

ICE CREAM!!

Green Star Program For schools that have staff & students who:  Desire to help SD23 hit the agreed to PSECA energy reduction requirements.  Wish to see thousands of dollars redirected to non-energy school needs such as books or equipment  Hate to see SD23 branded as failures  Love ice cream!

Green Star Program A RISK FREE one year Trial Assignment of current utility budgets to your school.  Do NOTHING:  Go over budget and OPS, as per usual, covers the cost  Go under budget and decide in the spring where to spend the surplus in your school.

Green Star Program A RISK FREE one year Trial Assignment of current utility budget to your school.  Do a LITTLE:  Shut off lights, equipment and systems when not needed, close doors and windows when not needing them to be open and expect a 10% savings to spend as the school sees fit

Green Star Program A RISK FREE one year Trial Assignment of current utility budget to your school.  WORK HARD at Energy Conservation:  Invite Energy and Sustainability Manager Harold Schock into our school for assistance  Get students and teachers to be diligent at observing energy being wasted  Use half the lights available during lunch breaks  Create our own cool ideas  Use the projected 20% energy dollar savings to reward students in an educationally responsible manner (and buy ice cream)

How Much are we really talking about?? Medium Elementary School 10% – 20% or $3,000 to $6,000

What Ifs The price of natural gas skyrockets mid season  OPS will work with finance to “right size” increased heating budgets “across the board” We fail to save energy and go over our budget  Ops will cover the energy costs as usual

Recap  FREE MONEY  LIMITED TIME OFFER  ZERO RISK  Free support by the Energy and Sustainability Manager, backed by the whole Operations Team.

Green Star Program Well, RVE…Do we have a deal?
