Observances are designed to enhance cross-cultural and cross-gender awareness and promote harmony among all military members, their families, and the civilian work force. These activities are extensions of the equal opportunity education and training objectives. They are set aside annually to recognize the achievements and contributions made by members of specific groups in our society. The focus of the observance should be directed toward encouraging interaction and not just recognition. Success can best be measured by the degree of cross- cultural and cross-gender participation. The US Army celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage during the month of May each year. This year’s theme is: “Leadership, Diversity, Harmony – Gateway to Success”. Ethnic observance are educational in nature and provide all people with a chance to learn about other people and cultures. Observances are conducted to recognize the continuous achievements of all The EO Community We thank all who supported and participated in the inaugural Community Diversity Walk. Diversity was celebrated in a big way, as thousands of Soldiers and hundreds of civilians took part in the Community Diversity Walk. As stated by SFC Alston, “Many people dream of dwelling in a place where they can live in harmony with others regardless of their race, religion, color, national origin, or gender.”, that ideal was celebrated during the walk. There are always opportunities for our collective communities to participate together as one team. Community participation during the planning of and execution of the ethnic observances are yet another way to participate in bringing together our communities. We welcome one and all who wish to volunteer their time and talents during these events, and we welcome all positive ideas that can lead to unity one step at a time. Thank you again for supporting Equal Opportunity, “It’s not just another program…It’s a way of life!” Ethnic Observances “Do Not Stand Silent: Remembering Kristallnacht 1938” That is the theme of this year’s Days of Remembrance; for Victims of the Holocaust, April 27 - May 4, On November 9, 1938, the Nazis unleashed a wave of pogroms against Germany's Jews. In the space of a few hours, thousands of synagogues and Jewish businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed. This event came to be called Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") for the shattered store window panes that carpeted German streets. The Department of the Army and Fort Leonard Wood want all people to remember what happened so as not to repeat a history such as this ever again.
