CSD Teacher Mentoring Program School Year Directors: Allan Bertram – CHS/CMS Ass’t. Principal Diane Olson – ESA Region 3 Consultant

Why we are here…  1) Introduction and review of the major school initiatives in the Chamberlain School District.  2) Overview of the New Teacher Mentoring Program.  3) Preparation for the 1 st week of school.  4) Because you are good and we want to help you become even better.

Goals or Objectives  1) To Prepare our new staff for a successful tenure in the Chamberlain School District.  2) To Provide new staff with the tools to sustain continued high student achievement levels.  3) To develop a collegial atmosphere for our new staff that will make their transition to our district successful.  4) To provide support for our staff in the areas of our district initiatives.

Initiatives or Programs  1) Tech Paths (Curriculum Mapping)  2) Infinite Campus  3) Achieve 3000  4) Writing to Win

Tech Paths   Curriculum mapping is a way to demonstrate what is being taught in the classroom, the standards that are covered, and the instructional strategies that are being used.  Is a working diary of your curriculum in your classroom.

Why we map?  Guaranteed Viable Curriculum  All Schools must show what is being taught in all classrooms.  Unlike other forms, maps are a living document in that they are flexible, collaborative, and allows teachers to reflect on what they are doing in the classroom.  Resource – Excellent opportunity to share with instructors from other districts.  Research proven – Marzano “What Works in Schools”

What Happens?  Departments can investigate the map to identify gaps in the vertical and horizontal alignment.  Creates a snapshot of the educational activities of every classroom within the district.  Captures the content, skills, assessment, and standards taught by every teacher.  Organizes the information into a visual that presents an overall timeline of instruction.

Infinite Campus   Used for the following:  Attendance  Grade Book  Student data and information  Reports on Individual Students to entire classes.  Planner

Achieve 3000  TeenBiz™ provides a Web-based, individualized reading and writing instruction program for grades 5-12 that reaches every student at his or her Lexile level. Powered by software that distributes assignments to the entire class, but tailors them according to each student's reading level, TeenBiz enables teachers to easily customize content and monitor student progress over time. Perhaps most important of all, TeenBiz is proven to accelerate reading comprehension, writing proficiency, vocabulary development and high- stakes test scores. Students in grades 7-12 are required to complete at least two TeenBiz reading assignments each week. Grades 5-6 also incorporate the reading program weekly into their lessons.Lexile level

Writing to Win  Writing to Win journal writing expands the idea of journaling to students writing about what they are learning in every classroom. The journal includes numerous writing strategies requiring critical thinking of students. These strategies help students focus on fluency in higher-order thought. Fluency is the ultimate intent, purpose and outcome of the journal component.

Mentoring Program – Why?  Put in place to help employees new to the district.  Very progressive District with a lot of expectations.  Sustain High Levels of Student Academic Achievement.  To retain quality staff – Set up for Success.

Components  Wikispace – Our Central Location for Discussions, latest information, helpful hints, etc.  Mentor Teachers – All 1 st year staff will be paired with a Veteran Teacher. (Conferencing, Observations, General Help)  Mentor Directors – Guidance – Will touch base with staff on a weekly basis. Here to help make your school year a success.

Observations  1 st Year Staff – Will observe their mentor teacher 4 times during the school year. One time per quarter.  2 nd Year Staff – Will observe a fellow teacher on staff twice during the school year. One time each semester. (Can be a different teacher each semester.)  Purpose – Is to see how other teachers engage students, handle classroom management, utilize technology, and deliver instruction.

Meetings  1 time per month.  1 st Wednesday of each month except for September. That meeting will be held on the 9 th.  Meetings will start at 3:45.  Focus of meetings will be the different district initiatives, technology integration, questions & concerns.

Point to Ponder  Take the attitude of a student, never be to big to ask questions, never know to much to learn something new. Og Mandino

???  Biggest Fear?  What you feel you need to be successful?
