Should anglers be able to use lead sinkers for fishing? By Benny Kriefall

Lead sinkers are useful to anglers, but they have a long term cost.  It is cheap.  It is heavy.  Lead is soft.  It is cheap.  It is heavy.  Lead is soft.

If fishermen use lead sinkers, they might fall off the line and aquatic creatures could swallow them. Wildlife is unnecessarily poisoned by lead.  The loon swallows the lead.  Loons swallow gravel to help digestion.  In 2003, Minnesota’s loon population was about 12,000, but it could go down with anglers using lead sinkers.  The loon swallows the lead.  Loons swallow gravel to help digestion.  In 2003, Minnesota’s loon population was about 12,000, but it could go down with anglers using lead sinkers.

Lead sinkers kill other wildlife besides loons.  There is a declining in the number of swans at Yellowstone National Park so they made a law banning lead sinkers in  Lead poisoning happens with birds that have a blood level with parts per million of 0.2 or higher and birds usually die when the blood level is at 1.2 parts per million.  There is a cycle of death for wildlife.

People can help reduce the use of lead sinkers.  Anglers don’t need lead sinkers.  Ask a local bait shop to supply nonlead tackle.  Use proper disposal for old tackle and never leave it on the shore.  Anglers don’t need lead sinkers.  Ask a local bait shop to supply nonlead tackle.  Use proper disposal for old tackle and never leave it on the shore.
