Depletion of the Ozone Layer

Introduction: The ozone layer or stratosphere is a belt of naturally occurring gas which envelops the Earth.

Problem Description The Ozone Layer is vitally important to us since it protects us from ultraviolet radiation, but it is being destroyed; causing a big hole called the “Ozone Hole.” This phenomenon is commonly created in Antarctica where exists a special condition which accelerates the depletion of the Ozone Layer.

Causes of the depletion of the Ozone Layer. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) contain fluorine, carbon, and chlorine carbons. They are the main reason for ozone depletion. Used as coolants in refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners and also in propellants in aerosols. A chlorine atom reacts with an ozone atom, taking an oxygen with it forming chlorine monoxide (ClO) and leaving a normal oxygen atom. ClO can react to a second ozone molecule (O3) to yield another chlorine atom and 2 molecules of oxygen.

Effects Cooling of the Earth’s stratosphere Global warming Adverse impacts on crops and animals Reduction in the growth of plankton in the Earth’s oceans.

Possible Solutions Reduce the large amount of CFCs being produced. For more of a long term solution is to completely phase out the use of CFCs. Commonly found in propellants in aerosols.

Conclusions: What we have learned The devastating effects of ozone depletion We should use CFCs cautiously, if not, completely phase out its use. We could use sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful UV rays.
