Energy and Solar Ovens

Review Matter is made up of particles or molecules. These molecules move (or vibrate) constantly. A rise in the temperature of matter makes the particles vibrate faster.

Thermal energy is what we call energy that comes from the temperature of matter. The hotter the substance, the more its molecules vibrate, and the therefore the higher its thermal energy.

Types of Energy Transfer Review There are three types of energy transfer 1. This type of transfer is through direct touch….what is it?

2. This type of transfer occurs in liquids and gases. It is caused by the movement of particles. What is it? 3. This type of energy transfer occurs through waves. The sun heats the earth through this type of transfer. What is it?

Let’s Focus on Radiation Today we will learn about solar cookers and you will design your own using the materials provided. We will test these cookers outside tomorrow of Friday (weather permitting)

Solar radiation is light energy from the Sun. So you've got the Sun. Millions of kilometers away from the Earth it constantly giving off a huge amount of energy and radiation.

Why does it get hot inside a car? Why does the parking lot black top get hot?

You are going to use their knowledge of solar and thermal energy to create a working device. You are going to create a working solar oven out of a pizza box, wax paper, aluminum foil, construction paper, and clear packing tape.
