Self-determination theory 6 Humans strive to be self-governed Behaviour should be “volitional, intentional and self-caused or self- initiated” Three basic needs (of staff): Autonomy Relatedness Competence When intrinsically motivated, people want to engage in the activity (Wehmeyer and Little 2009; Hefferon and Boniwell 2011)

Self-determination theory 7 Autonomy Ability to make one’s own decisions Has choices Relatedness Feeling part of a larger family or organisation Able to communicate with others Respecting others and feeling respected Competence Able to judge if they are performing tasks well Skills are recognised and celebrated (Wehmeyer and Little 2009; Hefferon and Boniwell 2011)
