What is typography? “As the saying goes, type is a beautiful group of letters, not a group of beautiful letters.” — Matthew Carter What is typography? This quote is from a well known typographer and graphic designer, called Matthew Carter. He says “As the saying goes, type is a beautiful group of letters, not a group of beautiful letters.” This quote suggests it isn’t about the words you chose to put on paper, it’s how you make them look beautiful on paper.

Johannes Gutenberg perfected the art of typography around 1455. Typography history Johannes Gutenberg perfected the art of typography around 1455. The art of typography began in the west around 1455 when Johannes Gutenberg perfected the craft of printing from individual pieces of type.

Brody is known for pushing the boundaries as he was devoted to his anti-traditional views. He worked for ‘The Face’ magazine from 1981-1986, which was a London based “style” magazine.

David Carson American graphic designer David Carson is best known for his art in typography. Carson changed the dimensions of design and pushed his boundaries, as he shocked the world with his ability to use text to create art. He would squash up, enlarge, and re-arrange text to create a sense of design. In 1990 he used boundary-breaking typography in the “Ray Gun” magazine. Carson would almost make his text unreadable, making the characters upside-down and scattered around the page. This was called the “grunge” typography era. The main focus of these designs is their use of text, and how the typography is presented. 1990’s “Ray Gun” magazine.

“Grunge” typography “Ray Gun” Magazine. Throughout the 90’s the “grunge” era exploded in to a trend. Skate boards, graffiti, posters, and banners were all messy. Words were unreadable, but the subconscious mind always knew what the piece was trying to say. As you can see by these images, they make the viewer think outside the box. They aren’t just letters and words, their pieces of design. “Ray Gun” Magazine.

From watching that video you can see how David Carson expresses himself through typography. And although he is using text to create art, you don’t necessary read his work or understand what it means; as it’s all part of the “grunge” effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV0DTNLslLY

Didot is an example of a modern serif typeface which dates back to the late 1700’s. This typeface has a much more pronounced contrast between thick and thin lines of its characters.
