eLearning and Matilda

Alexia Bumbaris Historian and PhD- student at the University of Vienna Focus on Gender History Former study assistant eLearning at the School of Historical and Cultural Studies, University of Vienna

What is eLearning? Electronic Learning is a wide set of applications and processes, such as web- based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration by delivering content, facts and pieces of information via Internet, intranet/extranet, audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, and more.

What is eLearning? My understanding of eLearning: Technology supported education/learning, medium of instruction is through computer technology “pedagogy empowered by digital technology”

What is eLearning? eLearning: No consistent definition Various kinds of learning and teaching Blended Learning to be defined as a mixture of phases of presence and online working, as well as online or distant learning (without face-to-face contact) Three levels of eLearning implementation: basic, intermediate and advanced

Levels of eLearning A)Basic level: Providing basic information about the course, namely organisational issues (time, place, teacher, ECTS, semester plan with fixed dates), aims and methods bibliography links In addition providing teaching aids (sources, electronic texts)

Basic level - example

Levels of eLearning B) Intermediate level – Blended Learning Basic level (information on organisation and teaching aids) + eLearning tools to be found on either platforms, forums or blogs to complete exercises and to exchange information and experiences with other users and teachers

Intermediate level- example

Levels of eLearning C) Distance Learning Entired module/course and its contents are conveyed exclusively via eLearning: eLearning platform helps to manage lessons, exercises, communication and exchange between students and students and teachers, and consultation hours

eLearning and Matilda: eLearning does not aim to replace conventional methods of learning at all! It is merely entitled to support in structuring teaching and learning and in facilitating the handling of organisational issues – according to the needs of an International Joint Degree Study. eLearning and Matilda

Reasons for eLearning Arguments for implementation of eLearning at universities in general: To offer higher flexibility time-wise as well as regional independence To strengthen eMedia competence and skills New possibilities for didactics To permit access to all relevant information any time To structure the course so that activities, exercises and deadlines are clearly presented

Reasons for eLearning How Matilda could benefit from eLearning: Communication (fora) Organisation (eApplication; preparation of meetings etc.) Community and Networking Alumni Mobility Management Platform to place the “imagined” community of a Joint Degree Study …
