Animation - uses and types Unit 39 - Web Animation for Interactive Media

In this session: Describe web animation What is it? Explore the uses for web animation How is web animation used ? Explain the differences between web animation and traditional animation How is web animation different to more traditional types? Evaluate the advantages of web based animation State what the benefits to web based animation are and IMPORTANTLY why are these benefits? 5 Mins – Students will look at the uses of Web Animation. Start a brief discussion to assess prior learning.

What is web animation? Turn to the person next to you and come up with a definition of web animation. This definition should contain at least 2 statements about web based animation. Write these down While you wait: Discuss what you think animation is… how is it different to real life? Jobs – Local links 5 Mins – Students will look at the uses of animation and discuss this with the person sat next to them. Generate interest looking at loacal jobs.

Impact of web animation How is web animation different to more traditional animation? Take a moment to think about traditional animation – this could be anything from The Simpsons to an animation about changing a light bulb. Write down what you feel is the most important difference web based animation has compared to a traditional animation. – Write this on a post it note. Think about the uses. While you wait: - explain why this is so important – how could it benefit people? Collect post-its on the board/windows – encourage disagreement if need be. (who disagrees with the importance). What are the patterns?

Uses for web animation Terminology alert: Interface elements – methods of interacting with software – a roll-over button is an interface element. Linear – a sequence of events. Time is linear Uses for web animation There are lots of uses for animation on the web. Research and document the following: Banner adverts Animated interface elements Linear and interactive animations. Promotion Instruction Information Entertainment. After groups complete their worksheet Whole group feedback as to what this is – until all sections complete. Task: In your group (no more than 4) you will be given one of the uses listed. For this you will need to present to the class exactly what makes this different from the rest.

Research task You are to research a specific skill in Flash that you have not been taught. This is to go towards your project. Document this new skill using Flash. You will be asked to show an example of this skill and write a brief explanation. Remember to reference where you learnt the new technique. As an extension students can look at researching new skills in Flash. This will be used as part of their project.

Lets wrap this up… How have we Identified what web animation is? How do we know we have discussed the uses for this? Explain to the person next to you how your cartoon helped us evaluate web animation. Each person write down one thing you would like to know more about from todays session – stick these on the window on you way out.
