Genesis Union Church Bible Study Genesis Chapter 9 Theme: New instructions and arrangements; the sin of Noah and his sons.

And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Genesis 6:13

Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Genesis 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Genesis 9:3-4 3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. 4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

Genesis 9 Man in Dominion Man’s relationship to God, his environment, and his responsibilities changed Animals now Fear men All “living creatures” OK for food

The Noachide Torahs: 1. The establishment of courts of justice 2. Prohibition of blasphemy 3. Prohibition of idolatry 4. Prohibition of incest 5. The prohibition of murder 6. The Prohibition of robbery 7. The eating of flesh cut from a living animal (eating of blood)

The Noachide Laws 1.No idol worship 2.No blasphemy (taking God’s name in vain) 3.No murder 4.No incest 5.No stealing 6.No eating blood, nor meat from strangled animals 7.Man to submit to civil authority of human government

No Eating Blood Blood is where the live is Blood was only to be used for sacrificing to Yahweh Blood too Holy for man to partake

Genesis 9:5-6 5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. 6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Murder is Specifically Prohibited Man now given authority to mete out justice Prior to the Flood penalty for murder seems to be banishment from God After the Flood, penalty for murder is capital punishment - Death The principle of earthly government is established

Genesis 9:7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Genesis 9:8-9 8 And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;

A “covenant” (berit, Heb.) is the most solemn and binding form of divine promise, an assurance to man of divine commitment, and a reminder given by God of His faithfulness. God makes the covenant, fixes its terms and conditions, and remains everlastingly faithful (3:15; 12:1-3; Ex 19:5; Deut 30:3; 2 Sam 7:16). Covenant

1.The Adamic covenant (Gen 2:16, 17) 2.The Noahic covenant (Gen 9:8-17) 3.The Abrahamic covenant (Gen 12:1-3) 4.The Mosaic covenant (Ex 19:5) 5.The Restoration covenant(Deut 30:3-10) 6.The Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7:16) 7.The New covenant (Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:8) Seven Covenants

Genesis 9: And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

2 Peter 3:3-7 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Verse 8 Covenant God makes covenant with Noah Covenant is a contract, a promise Noah's covenant is unilateral It does not depend on man Some covenants do have mutual requirements (bilateral) Noachide covenant is the First covenant mentioned by name in the Bible Covenant: God will never again destroy world by means of a Flood

Genesis 9: And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

The word signified the promise to Noah as a sign of the covenant between God and mankind. Same word used in Revelation 6:2, possibly as a sign of the covenant between antichrist and mankind. Hebrew: qesheth (H7198); (LXX) Greek: toxon (G5115)

Revelation 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Genesis 9: And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Genesis 9: And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

The First Rainbow God Specifically set many things in the Heavens for signs Didn’t make a New sign each time He wanted to use a sign “God would remember” Figure of speech God is not a man First generation after the Flood probably was anxious for each rain to Stop!

Genesis 9: And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. 19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.

Genesis 9: And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: 21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

Genesis 9: And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

Saw Nakedness Problem wasn’t that he saw nakedness, it was he told everyone in the market place and embarrassed Noah.

Genesis 9: And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
