Time Management BIOE 1000 – Orientation and Introduction to Bioengineering

How Much Do You Study? Survey students coming from HS – Less than 1 hour per night? – 1 – 3 hours per night? – More than 3 hours per night? Repeat survey with students coming from college Result: you have to study more in college!

Social Sciences & Humanities Do some reading every night Research and write papers for due date Study for midterm and final exams Workload tends to be irregular NOTE: I’m generalizing – this certainly does not apply to every student/program!

Science & Engineering Do homework problems every night Finish lab reports & projects for due date Study for midterm and final exams Workload tends to be regular I’m generalizing again, but this pretty much applies to every engineering student!

How Much Should I Study? Every credit hour in science & engineering classes can mean up to 2 – 3 hours of work per week outside the classroom A full time schedule of classes (12 – 16 credit hours) will require 20 – 30 hours of work outside the classroom! Being an engineering student is a full-time job!

Plan Ahead Use a small notepad – Write down assignments & due dates – Cross items off when completed Use a planner – Free at Rocket Launch – Can make a complete daily schedule for class, work, or extracurricular activities – Create list of assignments, projects, and exams

Prioritize Determine which tasks are most important and get these done first! Don’t be a perfectionist on minor tasks Make time for yourself – Reserve time for three square meals – Set aside time for exercise and recreation – Play time can serve as a reward for completing undesirable tasks

Procrastination Don’t put things off – make a schedule and stick to it! Complete tasks you don’t like doing first to get them out of the way Use fun activities as rewards for completing other tasks Break up big projects into several small pieces

Miscellaneous Suggestions Know your peak times – Are you a morning, afternoon or night person? Schedule time for breaks – Eat well and exercise regularly Use time between classes Consolidate errands Find a quiet place to study

Miscellaneous Suggestions Break up long study sessions into smaller ones to prevent boredom – Don’t study Calc for six straight hours – Break it up into one or two hour sessions Multitask whenever possible – Read while eating, waiting for a bus, etc. – Do homework problems at the Laundromat

Miscellaneous Suggestions Just say “No!” – Don’t overextend yourself with too many activities – Tell friends you’ll catch up with them later – Get Caller ID and voic – Log off of Instant Messaging when working on the computer

Homework Assignment Document how you spent your time during every waking hour of a “typical” weekday Choose a day with a large number of classes Be as detailed as possible without getting too personal Be honest – this is for your benefit!
