SCIENTERRIFIC NOTATION

Scientific Notation a x 10 b a = a real number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10 b = an exponent or power of 10 that indicates the magnitude of the measurement; positive (+) exponent is larger than 1; negative (-) exponent in smaller than 1

Scientific Notation 5, , ,054, x x 10 9

Scientific Notation x x x x x x x 10 10

HOW TO MEASURE SCIENTERRIFICALLY

100 miles vs miles One of your parents tells you that Grandma’s house is 100 miles from your house. You and your family drive to Grandma’s house and your car’s odometer measures the trip to be 96.7 miles. Is your parent wrong?

Precision vs. Accuracy A B DC Consistency Bull’s Eye

1.24? 1.25? 1.26?

1.43? 1.44?

SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

Significant Figures (i.e. sig figs) are digits of quantitative data that contribute to the precision of the measurement. Insignificant figures are digits that play no role in the precision of the measurement. Insignificant figures will be absent when the measurement is written in Scientific Notation.
