Question A: 2 marks Question A: What is racism? Answer 1: The belief that some races are superior to others. 2 marks for a correct definition of the key word.

Question B: 4 marks Question B: Do people from a different religion have the right to try to convert you? Give two reasons for your point of view. Answer 1: No I do not think they do because trying to convert followers of other religions when living in a multi-faith society is a type of prejudice and discrimination. This would get 1 mark for giving one reason. Answer 2: No I do not think they do because trying to convert followers of other religions when living in a multi-faith society is a type of prejudice and discrimination. Trying to convert other religions is discriminating against those who do not have the same faith as you. By developing the reason the answer moves up to 2 marks.

Question B: 4 marks Question B: Do people from a different religion have the right to try to convert you? Give two reasons for your point of view. Answer 3: No I do not think they do because trying to convert followers of other religions when living in a multi-faith society is a type of prejudice and discrimination. Trying to convert other religions is discriminating against those who do not have the same faith as you. Also, trying to convert others can lead to arguments. The answer now gives another reason and so it moves up to 3 marks. .

Question B: 4 marks Question B: Do people from a different religion have the right to try to convert you? Give two reasons for your point of view. Answer 4: No I do not think they do because trying to convert followers of other religions when living in a multi-faith society is a type of prejudice and discrimination. Trying to convert other religions is discriminating against those who do not have the same faith as you. Also, trying to convert others can lead to arguments and even violence within a multi-faith society when people are told their religion is wrong. By developing the second reason, the answer moves up to 4 marks for two developed reasons – full marks.

Question C: 8 marks Question C: Explain why Christians should help to promote racial harmony. Answer 1: Christians should help to promote racial harmony because this is the teaching of Jesus especially in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. LEVEL 1: 2 marks for a reason expressed in basic English.

Question C: 8 marks Question C: Explain why Christians should help to promote racial harmony. Answer 2: Christians should help to promote racial harmony because this is the teaching of Jesus especially in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus was asked what loving your neighbour meant and he told the parable as a reply. As Samaritans and Jews hated each other and the Samaritan endangered himself to help a Jew, Jesus was clearly showing that no Christian should be racist. LEVEL 2: by developing the reason, the answer goes up to level 2 and because the answer is written in clear English it would gain 4 marks.

Question C: 8 marks Answer 3: Christians should help to promote racial harmony because this is the teaching of Jesus especially in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus was asked what loving your neighbour meant and he told the parable as a reply. As Samaritans and Jews hated each other and the Samaritan endangered himself to help a Jew, Jesus was clearly showing that no Christian should be racist. Also St Peter received a vision in which God showed him that all races are equal and must be treated equally. LEVEL 3: by adding another reason the answer moves up to level 3 and because the answer is written in a clear style of English with some use of specialist vocabulary (Jesus, parable, Good Samaritan, loving neighbour, St Peter, vision) it would gain 6 marks.

Question C: 8 marks Answer 4: Christians should help to promote racial harmony because this is the teaching of Jesus especially in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Finally all the Christian Churches have made statements in favour of working for racial harmony and Christians should follow the teachings of their Church. LEVEL 4: by adding a further reason, the answer moves up to level 4 and because it is written in a clear and correct style of English with the specialist vocabulary from level 3 (plus statements from Christian Churches) it would gain 8 marks – full marks.

Question D: 6 marks Question D: ‘Women should have the same rights as men in religion.’ (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (3 marks) (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3 marks) Answer 1: (i) I agree with this because some Protestant Christians would agree with this because they believe that men and women were created totally equal by God. 1 mark for a personal opinion with a reason. Answer 2: (i) I agree with this because some Protestant Christians would agree with this because they believe that men and women were created totally equal by God. It says in Genesis 1 that God created male and female equally. The reason is developed so it moves up to 2 marks.

(3 marks) (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3 marks) Answer 3: (i) I agree with this because some Protestant Christians would agree with this because they believe that men and women were created totally equal by God. It says in Genesis 1 that God created male and female equally. Also Jesus treated women as his equals and had women disciples showing that women should have equal rights. The answer now gives another reason for their opinion, so it moves up to 3 marks.

Question D: 6 marks Question D: ‘Women should have the same rights as men in religion.’ (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (3 marks) (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3 marks) Answer 2: (ii) Catholic Christians might disagree with me because they think that women cannot be priests. They believe that because Jesus only appointed men as his apostles only men can be priests. The reason is developed so it moves up to 2 marks.

Question D: 6 marks Question D: ‘Women should have the same rights as men in religion.’ (i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (3 marks) (ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you. (3 marks) Answer 3: (ii) Catholic Christians might disagree with me because they think that women cannot be priests. They believe that because Jesus only appointed men as his apostles only men can be priests. They would also argue that the priest represents Jesus at Mass and as Jesus was a man, only male priests can celebrate Mass. The answer now gives another reason for some people disagreeing, so it moves up to 3 marks.
