Landforms Unit #1- Topography

IN THIS ACTIVITY YOU WILL: Learn about the different types of landforms. Use a Frayer Model to describe all landforms and then choose one landform to write about in one paragraph that explains the name and description of the landform, characteristics of the landform, as well as examples and non- examples.

Set up your paper using this Frayer Model Definition/Characteristics: Illustration Example: Non-Examples Name of Landform You should include 2 Frayer models per page

Still don’t get it??? Let’s look at some Examples of Landforms What are Landforms??? A landform is any natural formation of rock and dirt, found on Earth. It can be as large as a mountain range, or as small as a hill. It can be as large as a continent, or as small as a pond. Still don’t get it??? Let’s look at some Examples of Landforms

MOUNTAINS Mountains are large landforms that stretch above the surrounding land. Characteristics: Tall and can be sharply pointed like the Rocky Mountains. Mountains can be lower and more rounded like the Appalachian Mountains.

Example: Mountain Frayer Model Mountains are large landforms that stretch above the surrounding area. Rocky Mountains -hill -ocean

Definition: Valleys are lowlands that lie between mountain ranges. Characteristics: good place for communities because water runs down from the mountains and creates rich soil to grow crops. Open and flat land Deep and narrow Examples: San Bernardino Lancaster, Glendale, Burbank VALLEYS

Valley Frayer Model Lowlands in between mountains. Mountain Hill Ocean Burbank San Bernardino Glendale Lancaster Mountain Hill Ocean

Beaches Definition: A beach is a landform along the shoreline of an ocean, sea, lake, or river. It is an area of sand sloping down to the water of a sea or lake Characteristics: Loose particles of rock (sand). Along an ocean Wouldn’t exist without rivers depositing sand Example: Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Redondo Beach, Dockweiler Beach

ISLANDS Islands are areas of land that are not connected to a continent and are surrounded by water. A group of islands is often called an archipelago. Characteristics: Water on all sides Examples: Hawaii Catalina

Let’s look at some examples PLATEAUS Plateaus are high, flat areas of land Characteristics: STEEP SIDES and a FLAT top. They may stretch for miles in every direction. Let’s look at some examples

REVIEW OF LANDFORMS MOUNTAINS: High steep, rocky land VALLEYS: Low land in between mountains PLATEAUS:Steep, sloped land with a flat top BEACHES: Sandy area near ocean/lake ISLANDS: Land surrounded by water

Writing Activity Guidelines for Success: Paragraph MUST have at LEAST5 sentences. Introductory paragraph should explain what a landform is. Each box should represent a sentence in the paragraph. Spelling and grammar should be correct Paragraph MUST BE NEAT!!! Students will choose their favorite landform to write a paragraph and present it to a partner.

Read it…. Rate it… In Science, we are learning about landforms. Landforms are natural features on Earth. My favorite landform is a Plain. Plains are broad, flat stretches of land. Two characteristics of plains are that they are lower than the land around them and are pretty huge areas. While a good example of a plain is the Santa Barbara Coastal Plains, the Rocky Mountains are not an example. Mountains are a different type of landform. 1- Understood simple concepts. 2- Understood this landform almost well enough to teach it. 3- Understood this landform well enough to teach it. 4- Understood this landform well enough to teach it. BETTER than my teacher.

Read it… My favorite landform is beaches because they are fun and the water is very warm. I got to the beach with my family. This is why it is my favorite. It is best to go when it is hot because then you can cool down. We normally bring some food to eat too because after playing in the water all that time, you get hungry!!! 1- Understood simple concepts. 2- Understood this landform almost well enough to teach it. 3- Understood this landform well enough to teach it. 4- Understood this landform well enough to teach it. BETTER than my teacher.

CREATIVE ACTIVITY Each person will get a container of play dough to make models of the landforms. Each person at your group should work on a different landform. Your group will be graded on whether or not you include all characteristics of your landform.
