Feature Article Third Grade Language Arts LeAnna Crawford Wingo School

Feature Articles Always reports facts, realistic ideas, or real events. May have headings that divide the article into sections. May repeat or quote what an expert says. May have photographs, graphs, or other visuals with captions. May tell the meaning of words that pertain to that subject.

Feature Articles Needs a “Catchy” title to catch the reader’s attention. Needs a “Grabber” paragraph to grab the interest of the reader. Needs information that is factual, but not boring. Needs a “wrap-up” paragraph that brings the article to a nice close.

Sensational Solar System Have you ever wondered about the different planets?Come along with us as we take a trip through the solar system and learn about the planets. Get ready to blast off!

Our Solar System The solar system is made up of our sun and everything that travels around it. The word solar means “having to do with the sun.” The sun is in the center of the solar system. Around the sun travel planets, moons, comets, asteroids, and other space objects.

Planets in Our Solar System Planets are large space objects that move in a path around suns. This path is called an orbit. The nine planets in our solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Comparing Planets Pluto is the smallest planet and the furthest from the sun. It is usually covered with a layer of ice. Mercury is the planet closest to the sun. It gets hot enough on Mercury to melt tin cans. Jupiter is the largest planet. It is so big that all of the other planets could fit inside it.

Back to Earth! Well, our trip is coming to a close. Hopefully, you learned some interesting facts about our solar system and planets. Neil Armstrong stated after landing on the moon that it was “one giant leap for mankind.” You have made one giant leap toward learning!

“Counting Down” Before Taking Off On Your Own Writing Adventure Remember key elements to a feature article It is factual and informational It needs to capture the reader’s attention It can have graphs, pictures, and special vocabulary, or quotes from or about your topic

Review the Feature Article and Look for these key concepts Look at the underlined section of part of the feature article and discuss as a group why it is important.
