The science behind electricity Hunter Walsh Term1 Sceince project 9/17/14

So first off lets start by explaining what electricity is even made out of and when it was discovered, and what the basic units are, and also how it conducts.

Elements The elements that make electricity (you could say) are carbon and copper. The copper serves as a conductor while the carbon serves as a positive terminal. Now what really makes up electricity is the flow of moving electricity. When the electrons flow it is called an electrical current. Now lets go on to a deeper part of what makes electricity.

Atoms Atoms are key components to what makes electricity. These are the three main parts of a atom: Protons- they have a positive charge, they are in the middle of the atom. Neutrons- They have no charge they are the neutral part of the atom. And finally Electrons- they are very small and weigh a lot less then the protons and neutrons, they are not part of the atom instead they move around in orbits outside the nucleus.

Electricity Measurement system of Electricity Amperage: Amperage (or “Amps”) is the amount of electricity actually flowing through the source of basically the wire. Voltage: Voltage or (Volts) is the pressure of the electricity flowing through the current/wire. OHM: It is the amount of electrical resistance. Current: It is how wide the wire is for the electricity to flow through.

Conduction Water: Water actually does not conduct electricity… It is the impurities in it that do, like salt. When the salts are dissolved in water, they separate and creates electrically charged atoms that are called Ions. This is what makes water conductive but pure water is actually not conductive. Metals: What makes metals conductive are the free electrons. Most electrons are stuck to what ever item but the metals, copper, silver, and gold, a lot them are roaming freely around the solid, and when electricity is forced on them they move in a way producing a current. And for those who don’t what conduction is, it is when electricity flows through something basically like electricity through water or through a metal.

Now how do we get electricity? First you need a negative terminal and a positive terminal. Then you need wires connected to both the negative and the positive. THEY SHOULD NEVER CONNECT!! If both wires from the negative and positive connect to each other the whole battery will short circuit and sparks will fly everywhere and the wires will weld to the terminals, It could also possibly blow up. Last thing you need is a wire that’s grounded. Having something grounded is when you have a wire connected to a piece of metal so you will not get fried.

How electricity was founded It was discovered by Benjamin Franklin. The way he went by this discovery was he tied a key to a kite during a thunder/lightning storm even though he thought it was the water it was actually the key it’s self.

Battery powered automobile The Chevy Volt is a electric powered automobile. It features a gas engine, a generator, and the starter or the battery it’s self is powering it. Oh fun fact all cars electricity doesn’t come from the battery. The battery is only used to start the start which you could say is like ah generator and that’s where all the electricity comes from.
