More able Maths J2O project 12 schools – collaborative working

J2O project Workshop 1 (East Wichel, Colebrook Juniors, Oliver Tomkins): Using maths vocabulary and effective questioning to raise achievement Our workshop will show you how using specific maths vocabulary and good quality questioning has enabled more able children to justify and reason to show their understanding. We will share with you examples that can be used for all year groups as well as explaining how our approaches have been implemented and embedded within our schools.

J2O project Workshop 2 (Lainesmead, Chiseldon, Eldene): Developing self discovery and mathematical thinking Do your children rely on you to tackle a problem? This workshop is about providing children with the opportunity to tackle problems independently and overcome challenges in order to promote self discovery and develop mathematical thinking. We explore the role of the children and the role of the teacher in making better mathematicians. 

J2O project Workshop 3 (Even Swindon, The Grange Federation, Ruskin Juniors): Reasoning through Guided Maths and the use of structured sentences. What is Guided Maths? What might this look like in my school? What might be the barriers to this being successful? We will model a guided maths session where the focus is developing children’s reasoning skills. This will be done through the use of structured sentences to provide the children with a structure and a model to help verbalise their mathematical thinking.

J2O project Workshop 4 (Covingham Park, Nythe, Liden): Developing resilient problem solvers through teaching a range of skills What are the key problem solving skills that will improve children’s ability to access problems? We will explore some problems to identify key skills and look at what type of problems are more likely to invite certain skills.
