Toastmasters Education Overview Presented by: Adam Kutell ACG, ALB January 15, 2014

Why did you join Toastmasters Were you looking for a personal goal to get past stage fright? Did your boss tell you to come? (Should he/she have come too?) Were you looking to increase your value in your profession? What were you planning to AMELIORATE by joining Toastmasters?

What attracted you to South County Toastmasters? Did you look at other clubs first? Did you consider the positives AND negatives of joining a large club? Do you think your goals have changed?

Toastmasters Education Tracks Communication Leadership How they all come together (Distinguished Toastmaster) Toastmasters is above-all an educational organization, and they offer two overlapping tracks, as you will see some cross-over.

The “Communication” Track Competent Communicator (CC) Everybody who joins Toastmasters receives the first manual, “Competent Communication”

Competent Communicator Basic Skill Building Intermediate Skills The Ice Breaker Organize your Speech Get to the Point How to Say It Your Body Speaks Vocal Variety Research your Topic Get Comfortable with Visual Aids Persuade with Power Inspire your Audience When you are a new member, your first speech to the club should always be the ice-breaker so the other members can learn a little about you. Feel free to do your speeches out of order, but try to stay within the first five early on, and the second five later.

Completing the “Competent Communicator” Check if all the speeches have been evaluated and that the evaluator filled out the appropriate section. Annotate the 10 titles exactly the way you want to remember your speeches. Spelling, Capitalization, and Punctuation is important. Confirm your mailing address is correct in the manual. Fill out the employer section in the submission form if you want. Check the two “Advanced Manuals” in the form if you are eligible Hand the form or email the details to the Vice President of Education to submit. It is important to make sure spelling, caps, and punctuation is the way you want it in the award submission form. Also make sure your address is correct if you have moved since joining.

Clues to complete the “CL” manual All new members receive the Competent Leader Manual in their new-member packet. It also has ten projects some with multiple-parts.

“Advanced Communicator Bronze” Complete your Competent Communicator award and get it submitted. Complete all five speeches from one “Advanced” manual Complete all five speeches from a different “Advanced” manual

“Advanced Communicator Bronze” Complete your Competent Communicator award and get it submitted. Complete all five speeches from one “Advanced” manual Complete all five speeches from a different “Advanced” manual That’s it! Get your forms submitted with all the titles filled out, and start on your next award!

“Advanced Leader Bronze” (ALB) Earn the “Competent Leader” award Earn the “Competent Communicator” award Serve a complete six-month term* as a (T.I. recognized) club officer and participated in the preparation of the Club Success Plan while in this office. Participated in Club Officer Training (TLI) as a club officer Conducted two presentations from the “Successful Club Series” and/or the “Leadership Excellence Series”

The “Leadership” Track Competent Leader (CL) Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) High Performance Leadership Also known as Leadership Excellence (LDREXC)

High Performance Leadership This is a five-project plan devised by the member The member chooses three or more members as their “Guidance Committee” who offer periodic evaluation to the chosen tasks. There is no official* pre-requisite for this “award” District 8 (and other districts) will recognize this level if accomplished after Advanced Leader Bronze. Necessary as a prerequisite towards “Advanced Leader Silver”

The “Leadership” Track Competent Leader (CL) Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) High Performance Leadership (LDREXC) Advanced Leader Silver (ALS)

“Advanced Leader Silver” (ALS) Earn the “Advanced Leader Bronze” award Serve for an entire year term as a district officer (Dist Governor, LGM, LGET, PR, Sect, Treasurer, Div Governor, or Area Governor) Serve for one year either as a new-club-sponsor, new-club- mentor, or club-coach. These roles cannot be credited while also a member of the assisted club. Must be by appointment of the District Governor.

??????? What can I do after I complete the Communication Track and the Leadership Track? Many members will re-visit their past awards. There is no limit to the number of times you can get an award. ???????

Distinguished Toastmaster What comes next? Once you complete the ALS and ACG, you are eligible to receive your Distinguished Toastmaster, simply by having your form submitted. Distinguished Toastmaster
