Going out and Marriage

Going Out For males and females, going out with each other serves a practical purpose Before choosing a life partner, you have to know what you want Spending time in several different relationships is one way to find out You can make observations and practice relationship skills You can learn the qualities you like in a partner

Also try out communication skills to see what works and what doesn’t All of this is work for preparation for a possible long-term relationship in the future

Establishing rules Families will often set rules about when a teen is allowed to go out alone with someone Going out with someone has many new and challenging responsibilities. Families will think carefully about where, whom, and how long

Spending time alone vs. group Spending time alone: - Can bring a sense of security - Feels comfortable - Downside: relationships can be limiting Group dating: - Safer - Less expensive - Less nervous - Less reasonability for keeping the conversation going at all times

Different cultures Amish: - Not till the age of 16 are males allowed to look at the opposite gender without getting in trouble Afghanistan: - Dating is rare because marriages are arranged by parents. They attend different schools and the curfews are different for girls and boys Australia - Will go out in groups until 18 or 19 yrs. old. Girls ask boys and pay for dates too Iran - Dating is against the law. Teens are separated until marrying age. Where it has all been pre arranged

Central and South America - Dating is not allowed until 15. Dating is done in groups Japan and Korea -High school students don’t date. They spend time studying instead. Dating begins in college, boys will do the asking and also pay Europe - Dating is sometimes done in groups in certain parts of Europe - In Spain students join pandilla or a group of similar interest. Boys and girls both do the asking and pay also. - In Russia, boys and girls meet at clubs or dances where they can chat

Marriage When choosing a marriage partner. Look for the following: - Spend enough time learning about the other person - Know the person’s personality - Feel about certain traits and habits of the person

Teen Marriage The pressure on teen marriages is so strong that many end in divorce In one study almost 40% of females who married in their teens ended up in divorce Teen marriages don’t allow themselves a chance to pursue their education and career goals. Take the time to learn about themselves helps them make smarter decisions about what they want once they do get married.

Marriage within different cultures Sudan - Many has to offer a sheep or cattle for the loss of their daughter’s labor in support of the family China - The groom’s family will present a whole roasted pig to the bride’s family as an engagement gift Indonesia - Not uncommon to have 1,000 guest at the reception. Bride and grooms are required to meet each one in a receiving line before the reception can begin Denmark - Custom for the groom to disappear during the recepetion so all the single men can kiss the bride. The bride will also leave at some point so the groom can kiss all the single girls

Sweden - The girls will get an engagement ring. When they get married they will also receive a wedding band and a motherhood ring also. Sweden wives wear three gold rings Mexico - Custom for the guest to form a heart- shaped circle around the bride and groom during their first dance Poland - As the groom and bride enter the reception. The veil is removed from the bride representing the transition from maidenhood to married women. The groom will wear a funny hat to symbolize happiness and laughter in the marriage.
