Mirror Game

It is common to have a sign name if you are involved in the Deaf community. A person is identified by his/her sign name. Only a deaf person can give you a sign name. There are two types of sign names. arbitrary descriptive

Sign Name Used for identification Arbitrary Name Signs Uses manual alphabet. The initials of your name are shown. Sign located on body or in front of signer Examples: Sheri Cook Jennifer Gordon Diane Armato Jeannie Jones Bob Addie Gulley Paula Sheets Descriptive Name Signs Depict info about personality/physical characteristics Examples: Laurent Clerc (scar on face) Gallaudet (glasses) Mike (tall) Lori (always smiling) Charlie (big eyes)

Descriptive Sign Names Each of you will be given a temporary descriptive sign name. If you take ASL class this spring, you will be given a permanent sign name (descriptive or arbitrary).

Descriptive Sign Names On the board, list three things you love to do during your spare time (hobbies). Do you have any special talents? I will pick one of your hobbies or talents as your temporary sign name.

Introducing Yourself in the Deaf Community

Who Are These People? In the Deaf community, you always introduce yourself and define your connections to other people.

Deaf Norm: How Do You Connect to Me? Another important connection is to go through the history of who you know and who I know for everyone in the room so you can fit one another in the strata of your lives. This can seem tedious and mind-bending to those who aren't familiar with this cultural style of introduction, but, for the Deaf, it is important to know about your friends, family, where you work, and what school you attended. If you're new to ASL and you don't have many friends or experiences in Deaf culture, you can say you're a newbie in ASL, tell the group why you're there to learn, and ask them to help you.
