Confederation!!..for Most. The Lead up to Confederation, who wanted it, who hated it, and finally the BNA Act.

The Charlottetown Conference Politicians from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I) meet to discuss a UNION of the MARITIME colonies. Canada East and West request to join in on the conversation. They are going to propose CONFEDERATION of all the British North American colonies.

A Luncheon on the Ship The Queen Victoria On board this ship, Canadian politicians who have worked out a plan for the union of all of the colonies try to convince the Maritime colonies to join in on CONFEDERATION Among them were George Brown, John A. Macdonald, George Etienne Cartier, Alexander Galt, and D’Arcy McGee. The idea of CONFEDERATION really takes hold of the Maritime politicians and they set aside their ideas for a MARITIME UNION. THEY DECIDE THEY WILL DISCUSS THE IDEA OF CONFEDERATION AGAIN IN QUEBEC.

The Quebec Conference Quebec City: 7 delegates from New Brunswick, 7 from P.E.I, and 5 from Nova Scotia meet up with 12 delegates from Canada East and Canada West. Newfoundland also sends 2 officials. One thing they all agree upon: unions must be strong! The central government must be stronger than the local ones. THE SEVENTY TWO RESOLUTIONS: A document drawn up by the “fathers of confederation” that set out the plan for the new partnership of the colonies.

New Brunswick Waivers LEONARD TILLY: The Premier of New Brunswick and a staunch supporter of CONFEDERATION There were lots of people in N.B who opposed confederation. They are called ANTI-CONFEDERATIONISTS ON ELECTION DAY IN 1865 in NB THE ANTI-CONFEDERATIONISTS WON EASILY. WHY DID N.B GET CONVINCED OF CONFEDERATION??? 1. Tilley was their Premier and supported it. 2. The U.S ended reciprocity with N.B – This means that now goods will be taxed. THEY NEED MONEY 3. British government sends message encouraging confederation. 4. The Fenians ATTACK NEW BRUNSWICK= They need buddies. ANOTHER FACTOR: An annual grant is promised to those who confederate. It is called a SUBSIDY and is given based on population.

The Love and the Hate  Canada West Loves Confederation: Accept Quebec Resolutions 2 years before Confederation.  Canada East: Has to be convinced by PREMIER GEORGE-ETIENNE CARTIER. -Also the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SUPPORTS CONFEDERATION  Newfoundland and Labrador: DON’T JOIN CONFEDERATION FOR 82 YEARS!  P.E.I Joins SIX YEARS after CONFEDERATION  LONDON CONFERENCE: Delegates discuss how they need approval from the British Parliament before they CONFEDERATE

 The British North American Act united the four provinces. NEWBRUNSWICK, NOVA SCOTIA, AND THE TWO CANADAS WHICH ARE RENAMED ONTARIO AND QUEBEC=THE DOMINION OF CANADA  THE BNA ACT is formed off of the Seventy-two Resolutions worked out at the Quebec Conference  BNA ACT IS FORMALL PASSED ON JULY 1, 1867 The British North American Act (BNA Act)

WHAT GOVERNMENT DO WE WANT?  The formation of the new government is based on the AMERICAN and BRITISH government models.

Yay Confederation!
