Chapter 5 The Great Gatsby

Today’s focus will be on considering different interpretations of the text (AO3) Does the novel depict the illusive nature of dreams (specifically the American Dream) and how socio- economic conditions pre-determine success? Does the novel provide a misogynistic critique of the newly emancipated woman? Does the novel highlight America’s growing loss of morality in favour of materialism and consumerism? Does the novel depict a world in which the essence of the American Dream is corrupt and immoral? Does the novel provide a critique of the class system and its related prejudices?

Task: Analyse the language in the extracts and quotations you have been given. Try to apply as many different interpretations of the novel to these extracts as you can. Use your contextual understanding to help you interpret and evaluate the way the novel presents its themes.

For example: The recurring motif of the ‘motor car’ represents materialism and its inherent lack of morality… References to the deceptive ways in which Gatsby has earned his fortune (his connections with Wolfshiem) imply that the American Dream is essentially corrupt and can only be achieved through fraudulent means…

‘When I came home to West Egg that night I was afraid for a moment that my house was on fire. Two o’clock and the whole corner of the peninsular was blazing with light, which fell unreal on the shrubbery and made thin elongating glints upon the roadside wires. Turning a corner, I saw that it was Gatsby’s house, lit from tower to cellar.’

‘Why, I thought – why, look here, old sport, you don’t make much money do you?’ ‘Not very much.’ This seemed to reassure him and he continued more confidently. ‘I thought you didn’t, if you’ll pardon my – you see, I carry on a little business on the side, a sort of sideline, you understand. And I thought that if you didn’t make very much – You’re selling bonds, aren’t you, old sport?’ ‘Trying to.’ ‘Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money. It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing.’

The flowers were unnecessary, for at 2 o’clock a greenhouse arrived from Gatsby’s, with innumerable receptacles to contain it. An hour later the front door opened nervously, and Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold coloured tie, hurried in. He was pale, and there were dark signs of sleeplessness beneath his eyes.

‘Gatsby, his hands still in his pockets, was reclining against the mantelpiece in a strained counterfeit of perfect ease, even of boredom. His head leaned back so far that it rested against the face of a defunct mantelpiece clock, and from this position his distraught eyes glared down at Daisy, who was sitting frightened but graceful, on the edge of a stiff chair.’

‘A brewer had built it early in the ‘period’ craze, a decade before, and there was a story that he’d agreed to pay five years’ taxes on all the neighbouring cottages if the owners would have their roofs thatched with straw. Perhaps their refusal took the heart out of his plan to found a family – he went into an immediate decline. His children sold the house with the black wreath still on the door. Americans, while willing, even eager, to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry.’

‘And inside, as we wandered through Marie Antoinette music rooms and Restoration Salons, I felt that there were guests concealed behind every couch and table, under orders to be breathlessly silent until we had passed through. As Gatsby closed the door to ‘the Merton College Library’ I could have sworn I heard the owl-eyed man break into ghostly laughter. We went upstairs through period bedrooms swathed in rose and lavender silk and vivid with new flowers, through dressing rooms and pool rooms, and bathrooms with sunken baths…finally we came to Gatsby’s own apartment, a bedroom and a bath, and an Adam’s study, where we sat down and drank a glass of some Chartreuse he took from a cupboard in the wall.’

‘I’ve got a man in England who buys me clothes. He sends over a selection of things at the beginning of each season, spring and fall.’ He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many coloured disarray. While we admired he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher – shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple-green and lavender and faint orange, with monograms of indian blue. Suddenly, with a strained sound, Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily. ‘They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.’

‘You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.’ Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close to a star as the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.

‘There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams – not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up his ghostly heart.’
