BATHROOMS Objective 7.02

Bell Ringer 11/4  Work with your table groups to brainstorm and make a list of at least 10 technological “gadgets” used in the Kitchen and Bathroom.  Be ready to share your ideas!

Discussion  What things did you see on the video that were not on your list?  Were there things they discussed in the video that you never thought of as “technology”? Explain.

Activity #1 Part I (20 min) Scenario: You signed up for the latest reality television show where you are brought to an unpopulated area to live for one year. A small house will be built for you to stay in for the year, and you have a choice in some of the design. You have a list of common household items that can go in your house, but you can ONLY select three. The items are a refrigerator, an oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, a washing machine, an air conditioner, a television, and an indoor toilet. Which items would you pick and why? Before you pick, consider these things about your location: - It is very hot and humid all year round - You are alone without access to other people - There is a portable toilet already set up a half-mile from the house - Clothes, sheets, dishes, and food will be supplied IN NOTEBOOKS, Write down the items you would choose and explain your reasons. Pick a representative from your group to share your decisions with the class.

Activity #2 Part II (25 min) Now refer to your list from the Bell ringer again. Work with your table groups and use the classroom computers to find out when these items were invented. You may chose to make a “better” list after watching the video clip. Create a timeline using these dates. Timeline should include the following: - Picture and date in correct order. - Highlight in Yellow the items that have been invented since you were born. - Highlight in Blue the items that were around when your parents or grandparents were young.

Activity #3 Part III (15) Now design YOUR OWN APPLICANCE of the FUTURE! It should do at least 3 tasks. Sketch a picture on the end (or back) of your timeline and label what it does. TURN IN POSTER BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY!

Bell Ringer 11/3  How many household gadgets do you have in your home today and what would you do without them?  Pick one item and reflect on the following in complete sentences: 1. How would your life have to change if you did not have this item? 2. How would living without this item make you feel?

Objective  Apply the elements of a functional bathroom

Outline/Vocab (on your course outline sheet) A. Types 1. Half-bath 2. Full bath 3. 3 ⁄ 4 bath 4. Master bath

Outline/Vocab (on your course outline sheet) B. Components 1. Fixtures a. Sink (1) Wall-hung (2) Pedestal (3) Inset (4) Above-counter b. Toilet/Water closet c. Shower (1) Tub shower (2) Stall shower d. Tub (1) Free standing (2) Enclosed (3) Whirl pool e. Cabinets/vanity

Bath Types  Identified by the number of basic fixtures included  Full- Toilet, Sink, Shower, Tub  Three-Quarter- Toilet, Sink, Shower  Half- Toilet, Sink

Bath Types: FULL

Bath Types: 3/4

Bath Types: 1/2

Master Bath  Full bath that is part of the master bedroom area  Often borrows design elements from the adjoining master bedroom

Bath Types: MASTER

Guidelines  If a home has only one bathroom, it should be a full or three-quarter bath located off a main hallway.  If a home has more than 1 bathroom, the most common arrangement is to locate at least one full bath in or near the sleeping area and a half-bath near the living area

Bathroom Fixtures  Much of a bathroom’s décor is determined by the fixtures and cabinets chosen  Types of Fixtures:  Bathtubs  Showers  Toilets (water closet)  Sinks

Bathtubs  Free Standing  Enclosed: surrounded by three walls  Whirl Pool

Showers  Tub Shower installing a shower head above the bathtub  Stall Shower can be walked into  Compact stall shower is a good solution for a small bathroom  Best option for shower walls is tile, which needs to be kept in good condition or the walls will leak

Bathroom Sinks  Also called wash-basins and lavatories  Types of sinks  Wall-hung  Pedestal sink  Inset sink  Above-counter basin

Bathroom Sinks  Wall-hung has open space beneath, which helps make a small bathroom seem roomier

Bathroom Sinks  Pedestal sink supported by a freestanding base. Many pedestal sinks are artfully shaped, giving them a look of sculpture

Bathroom Sinks  Inset sink set into a countertop (flushed with the countertop), the cabinet beneath provides storage

Bathroom Sinks  Above-counter basin a decorative wash bowl set on the counter. The plumbing extends down through the counter

Universal Designs for Bathrooms What are UD ideas for a bathroom?  Wide doorways and extra floor space  Grab bars placed near toilets and tubs  Elevated toilet seat added to a standard toilet  Shower with a seat  Shower doors that retract and pivot for easy access  Hand-held shower head  Single-lever shower controls  Tiltable mirror at the sink
