Unit 6

1.To learn about different cultures on table manners. 2. To discuss the kinds of food that people need for a balanced diet 3.To talk about the advantages and disadvantages of fast food. Learning Objectives

I. Warming Up:  1. Tell your classmates the Chinese table manners.the Chinese table manners  2.Tell your classmates your eating habits.

The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the Western, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, just be prepared for a ton of food. Chinese are very proud of their culture of cuisine (菜系) and will do their best to show their hospitality( 好客).

 And sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate. This is a sign of politeness. The appropriate thing to do would be to eat the whatever-it-is and say how yummy (好吃) it is. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite “thank you”and leave the food there.

 Don‘t stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl. Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine (神龛) to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense (烧香) stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to (相当于) wishing death upon a person at the table!

 Make sure the spout (壶嘴) of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody. The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.  Don‘t tap on your bowl with your chopsticks. Beggars (乞丐) tap on their bowls, so this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too slow in a restaurant, people will tap their bowls. If you are at someone's home, it is like insulting the cook.

II Reading and Recitation Ask some students to read the passage. Help to correct their pronunciation mistakes, and emphasize the following words and phrases.

 Food is the sky for the ordinary people.( 民以食为 天)  Birds die for food. (鸟为 食亡)  Vegetarians (素食者)  meat eaters (肉食者)  light food (清淡)  heavy food (油腻)  light-eater (食量小)  heavy-eater (食量大)  street stalls (摊位)  street vender (小贩)  soft drinks (软饮料)  alcoholic drinks (酒精饮 料)  Recipes (食谱)  Cuisine ( 菜系 )  Liquor ( 白酒)  Wine (葡萄酒)

III Dialogues III Dialogues Practice the dialogues with your partner several times to learn the useful expressions:  Let me play the host today.  Let’s go Dutch.  It was fabulous.  Cheers!  To your health!

IV Games  Fruit and vegetables contain a lot of vitamins, which are good for our health. Divide the class into two groups. One group choose “Fruit” and the other “vegetables”. Give as many words as possible that belong to each category in 5 minutes. The group which lists out more wins.

Fruit:  Apple pear fig (无花果) peach grape pineapple kiwifruit ( 猕猴桃) apricot (杏) banana plum (李) mango orange mandarin (柑 橘) tangerine( 橘子) date (枣 ) watermelon lemon coconut cherry( 樱桃) grapefruit (西柚) strawberry litchi longan sugarcane (甘蔗) persimmon (柿子) loquat (枇杷) olive papaya( 木 瓜) Vegetables:  Cabbage carrot eggplant (茄 子) bean onion garlic (蒜) pepper spinach (菠菜) lettuce ( 生菜) cucumber (黄瓜) tomato potato turnip (萝卜) celery (芹菜) mushroom cauliflower (花菜) bean- sprout (豆芽) pumpkin (南 瓜) leek (韭菜) radish (小萝卜) soybean (黄豆) ginger (姜) bitter-gourd (苦瓜) green onion (葱) lotus-root (莲 藕)

Par V Role Play  Inviting friends to dinner at home.  (Directions: Divide the class into groups of 4 or 5 students each. Play the parts of the host/hostess and the guests with the help of the following questions in turn.)

 1 What will a host/hostess say when he/she meets his/her guests at the door.  2 What will a host/hostess say at the dinner table?  3 What will a guest say at the dinner table?  4 What will a guest say before he/she leaves?

Part VI Discussions  Requirements: Divide the class into groups. Try to discuss one of the questions in your group and give a report for your discussion. 1.What kind of food do you like most? Why? 2.Where do you prefer to eat, at home or in a restaurant? Why? 3. What problems might food and drinks bring to people?

Useful sentences:  A high-protein, low- carbohydrate( 高蛋白、低碳 水化合物) diet  To one’s taste  To be delicious and nutritious  To have strong and hot taste  To be light and clear  To be good in color, flavor and taste at the same time  To go on a diet  To make yourself at home  To take your time and enjoy it  To eat it hot  To be a light eater  To have a good appetite for  How would you like your steak? Rare, medium or well-done?

Part VII A balanced diet Scientists have learnt a great deal about the kinds of food people need. They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day. What are these classes of food? They are: A green vegetables of all kinds, such as string beans, peas, lettuces, and cabbages. B fruits, such as apples, peaches and bananas. C other vegetables, such as beets, onions, carrots, tomatoes. D meat of all kinds, fish and eggs.

E milk and food made from milk, such as butter, cheese and ice-cream. F bread, cereal (麦片), rice. People in different countries and different areas of the world eat different kinds of things. Scientists say that none of these differences are really important. It doesn’t matter whether food is eaten raw or cooked, canned or frozen. It doesn’t matter if a person eats dinner at four o’clock in the afternoon or at eleven o’clock at night. The important thing, they say, is that every day a person should eat something from each of these kinds of food.

Part VIII Debate  Divide the whole class into two groups and debate whether you prefer fast food to home-made food or other foods.

I like fast food because:  Since the service is fast, it can meet the needs of the fast pace of modern life.  It is very convenient, I can go out eating without washing dishes, I can even call the restaurant to deliver the food.  It’s more delicious than the food in students’ dining-room.  We can have a big variety of food to choose from and we can find almost any popular dishes in the fast food restaurants.  It is almost as cheap as the food in a dining-room.  My mother doesn’t have to be busy or tired preparing every meal at home.  It is a fashion for people to eat in many chain restaurants such as McDonald’s.

I don’t like fast food because:  It is less nutritious than home-made food.  It is a waste of resources since fast food is mostly packed into cardboard and plastic containers which will cause pollution.  The taste is almost the same in every similar fast food restaurants.  It is more expensive than many other snacks.  It makes some youngsters dislike their parents’ cooking. Since children tend to eat out at fast-food restaurants more frequently, the families spend much more money on this.  Some popular fast foods, eg, fried chicken, hamburgers, contain large amount of calorie and fat. It has a negative effect on youngsters’ health.

Homework:  Listen to the drills and dialogues as much as possible.  Make a report on how to cook one of the Chinese dishes.
