CONNECTIONS

 Connections are professionals that you know or have worked with  Connections build your credibility  Connections can also help you with your job search by connecting you to other people  Do not treat them like Facebook Friends CONNECTIONS

GROUPS

 Groups are social interactions based on a specific topic or relationship  Groups are a good way to network  Often times have job announcements and connections  Join Groups based on your interests GROUPS

FOLLOWING

 Following is a function that updates your “LinkedIn Today News”  It will provide you with all news in fields that you select, for example PR, HR, Higher Education, and Technology  It also allows you to select new sources that you prefer such as the New York Times and Forbes FOLLOWING

COMPANIES

 Similar to Following on Twitter  Following Companies allows new job openings to be posted into your newsfeed- reducing your search for interesting positions  Following a Company is a similar function to groups, but without the conversations  Follow companies you would consider working for! COMPANIES

 Should be professional  Have only you in the frame, not you and your BFF  A photo is a first impression PHOTO

 This is your online resume!  Make sure your action verbs and key words are present  Follow all the rules you normally would with a resume EXPERIENCE

SKILLS & EXPERTISE

 Add lots of skills, but only the ones that you can actually do or are proficient in  A newer feature is being able to “Endorse” skills for you connections  Your connections endorse you for your skills and enforce your credibility SKILLS & EXPERTISE

EDUCATION

 Just like the education section on a resume  Shows how much education you have, graduation and activities  Generates your association with your school EDUCATION

CONTACT & RECOMMENDATIONS

 Your Connections can create a recommendation for you  You can have a more than one recommendation per position  A strong recommendation from one person will always be better than 10 weak recommendations  Contact: Choose how you would like to be contacted and make that visible CONTACT & RECOMMENDATIONS

 Have an unprofessional or casual picture  Have an incomplete profile  Spam all your contacts  Forget to change your notification settings  Don’t forget to check your LinkedIn regularly especially if you are job searching WHAT NOT TO DO

HOW TO JOB SEARCH WITH LINKEDIN

 Once you have a complete profile click on the Jobs tab at the top  Select ‘Students and Recent Grads’  Select the industry you want to explore, for example: Engineering YOU HAVE YOUR PROFILE, NOW WHAT?

 Use strategic search terms  LinkedIn will offer you suggestions at the bottom of the page for similar terms  Select what you want to narrow your search:  Narrow down your locations  Narrow down the experience level  Narrow down your industry START REFINING

 Read through descriptions, save for later, or apply!  If you notice some cool positions with a company but you aren’t quite qualified- follow the company and try in the future! SEARCH, SEARCH, SEARCH

 On the right side of the job description pages you will find other positions with that company or other similar positions  Don’t forget to look at these!  There is also a ‘People who viewed this job also viewed…’ section at the bottom of the page LINKEDIN OFFERS SUGGESTIONS EVERYWHERE

 InMail- an like feature where you can connections through LinkedIn  Recruiters can also send you messages  Notifications- you can be notified when other people view your profile  LinkedIn will tell you how often you appear in searches OTHER FEATURES
