WRITING A SLO October 17, 2013

ASSUMPTIONS IN WRITING AN SLO  Goal: Impact Student Achievement  Who to include?  Timeframe  Data for initial goal setting  Assessment for on-going formative measures  Assessment for final summative measure

Baseline Data and Rationale The goal includes all students in my 5 th grade class, except those who do not receive direct instruction in the area of writing. (25 of 27 children) Do I need to consider attendance issues for students? Possibly those who have at least 90% attendance rate? Strengths: Event sequence, (54%), Transitions (54%), Orients the reader and conclusions (50%), Capitalization (73%) and punctuation (88%) Growth Areas: Narrative Techniques 7/27 children met grade level standard (4/5 standards met) 8/27 children attained 2 or 3 standards 12/27 children attained 0 or 1 standards

LEARNING CONTENT: WHICH STANDARDS/SKILLS WILL I ADDRESS?  If you’re addressing the narrative ODW rubric, you’ve already answered this question.  If your SLO is grounded in CCSS or grade level standards, you’ve answered this question.  Rigorous and Measurable!

POPULATION: WHICH STUDENTS ARE INCLUDED?  Students who receive direct instruction in writing from me  25 of my 27 students  Attendance is only a concern for 1 student at this point.  Of the students not meeting the goal, most are scoring 2s on the rubric…only 10 scored a 1 and some were incomplete.

INTERVAL: WHAT IS THE TIME FRAME?  Year long…What can my students achieve in that time?

EVIDENCE SOURCES: HOW WILL YOU MEASURE LEARNING?  ODW (January and May)  Student Work: Narrative writing Unit  Monthly Quick Writes to measure progress on individual standards

TARGETED GROWTH: WHAT IS THE GOAL FOR STUDENT GROWTH?  Attainment, growth, tiered, program?  Tiered:  Students achieving 0-1 criteria will attain a score of 3 on at least 3 areas of the criteria  Students achieving 2-3 criteria will attain a score of 3 on at least 4 areas of the criteria  Students achieving 4 or more will attain a score of 3 in all criteria areas and a 4 in at least one of the criteria areas.  Students achieving a score of 4 in any criteria area will attain at least one additional 4 on the rubric.

STRATEGIES AND SUPPORT:  Lesson planning and implementation with team and coach where needed  Clarify areas on the rubric as a team  Create a student friendly rubric  Implement Peer Assessment checklist  Share student work during day 6 (Anchor Papers)  Small group writing instruction  Guided release in lesson planning/implementation  Study narrative techniques and write lessons to implement  Implement Sacred Writing Time to increase volume of student writing  Read articles and implement new practices as appropriate  Lab Classroom? Team teaching with coach?

SO…WHAT’S MY SLO? By June 2013, the students receiving writing instruction in my classroom will independently demonstrate their grade level proficiency on the district rubric On-Demand Writing Rubric as follows:  Students achieving 0-1 criteria will attain a score of 3 on at least 3 areas of the criteria  Students achieving 2-3 criteria will attain a score of 3 on at least 4 areas of the criteria  Students achieving 4 or more will attain a score of 3 in all criteria areas and a 4 in at least one of the criteria areas.  Students achieving a score of 4 in any criteria area will attain at least one additional 4 on the rubric.

THIS WAS MY SLO LAST YEAR By June, 2013, 80% of all 5 th grade students will independently demonstrate their grade level proficiency on the district rubric for writing in the areas of orienting the reader by establishing the situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters and providing a conclusion that follows from the narrated experience or events

TIPS WHEN WRITING AN SLO  Consider what is the population I will include?  Timeframe (most will be a year)  Data for initial goal setting- ODW?  Assessment for on-going formative measures- ODW, formative measures  Assessment for final summative measure- ODW  What is logical in terms of growth?  Professional development is key! What will you learn/change so the children will be impacted?
